  • it's just sad that so many people still post exclusively on there instead of having a Mastodon account. And the TrueAnon hosts scoff at people for being nerds for wanting to abandon it. Soon nobody will see their posts or anybody else's anyways because they'll be algorithmically censored. Then they'll complain no one is engaging with their social media accounts...

I guess I like social media as a way to get updates about stuff, similar to an RSS feed. But a lot of people just use it as a promotional thing (I guess that's probably most people's motivation to actually post stuff) so they want to be where everyone else is.

  • GOAT

    Jump
  • lol I'm just hearing it in his own English voice 😄

  • Chavez is already their Kim Il Sung. Maduro is their Kim Jong Il.

  • At least his statement today didn't do the same... unlike Bernie's statement.

  • I think the captive portal solution others have mentioned is the proper one.

And there is now an actual captive portal system that isn't hacky: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captive_portal#Captive_Portal_API already supported by iOS https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=q78sq5rv and presumably Android too.

And you can get an IP-address X509 certificate from LetsEncrypt https://letsencrypt.org/2025/07/01/issuing-our-first-ip-address-certificate

And if your router supports Enhanced Open, it can be a little more secure than a completely unencrypted connection to the wifi network itself.

Like segfault11 mentioned, if you could host a server locally instead of just going to/redirecting to https://marxists.org/ it would be even better (no traffic to the internet, works when the internet is down).

And you could disable routing any packets from the connected client over the internet, so people couldn't use your open network for internet and get your IP banned or something.

Of course doing this would be a really involved project. But it would be super cool because it could be completely offline (other than the fact that the X509 certificate is only for 6 days) and useful for more than just silly stuff.

It could even be IPv6 only since it wouldn't need to connect to the internet.

  • Mercenaries again???

Also it's insane how much weight Mike Pompeo is losing lol. I don't think I know of a single other person who's appearance has changed that much. I wonder if he had some kind of face surgery too?

  • Buying phones is simple because they're all just Qualcomm Snapdragon systems-on-a-chip and they're super proprietary. Do phone specs list the model of the RAM or storage? I guess finding some info is easier because you can just look up the SoC and find what sub-components it has. I agree it's insane that you can't even see the list of part models in laptops on the website even though they're written right on the parts themselves if you open the computer up. Even when a part is listed, it's probably made up of a more specific integrated circuit that you would still have to track down. Even though that's important info that determines how reliable that part is, and sometimes even what features it supports.

  • Looks neat. Jusant is another game with good climbing mechanics (and showcases Unreal Engine 5's new-ish lighting system). This game looks a bit more tedious than Jusant was, but maybe it isn't.

  • Noam kinda looks a bit like Pepe Mujica or Antonio Gutierrez, or Andres Manuel Luis Obrador. But also not really.

  • First: Every product we build must give people agency in how it works. Privacy, data use, and AI must be clear and understandable. Controls must be simple. AI should always be a choice — something people can easily turn off. People should know why a feature works the way it does and what value they get from it.

It's fine. I have always been able to disable stuff I don't want in Firefox. Stupid to do "AI" stuff but they do let you turn it off with about:config

  • hate this kind of naval-gazing tweet lol. sure it might be true in some abstract sense but also come on.

  • To be fair, that's probably a better ratio than most DSA chapters in the US.

Of course DSA isn't receiving financial or technical support from foreign governments.

  • id Software is probably the studio I had the most respect for, for some reason. This seems unsurprising, but I don't know why. I guess it's because the recent Doom games just seem like they had so much care put into their development and aren't grossly over-monetized. They've been part of ZeniMax for a long time though.

  • China really needs to step it up with public-facing software in general. They should translate more websites into English and make their websites faster and less clunky. They have a real opportunity to provide alternatives to American online services but they do that for very few services right now.

  • You don't unannounced bring a rifle to a No Kings protest. Total inability to read the room on their part and you don't bring guns to any kind of march unless you're with the organizers and that's what they want. If I was at a protest and some random kid was just walking around with a rifle I would not feel comfortable or "protected". It isn't his job to autonomously decide to "protect" a march. I guess I appreciate the spirit of it, but he'a gotta talk things over with other people first.

  • They're both idiots. What a stupid situation.

  • The end of the article says a number of other countries have nuclear heating.

  • I didn't know these were a thing. Cool!
