  • Sucks that they have to do this but whatever it takes to avoid US attacks. Unfortunately there's no magical defense system that can stop the US from destroying their infrastructure and killing people.

I wonder if Chinese companies will also be brought in, or if the US has told them no.

It's just so evil that this is basically the US saying "No, you are not allowed to develop your own resource extraction."

  • Google announced they're only going to release the Android source code twice a year from now on. It's barely open source. And completely controlled by Google, unlike desktop Linux. I only really see this as a negative, because the last thing we need is for more software developer energy being dedicated towards proprietary platforms. And Android devices have horrible custom firmware support. If anything, Android desktops would be more proprietary than existing ones which are the easiest computers to customize currently. But these Android computers will probably by ARM devices that have a similar story in terms of it being hard to run a different OS. I think ChromeOS is already sorta this way.

  • Hopefully it isn't the kind of company that gets VC funding or anything. Maybe it'll be a RedHat style priority support company thing? Or maybe it's goal isn't to charge money for stuff at all.

It's cool Poettering is leaving Microsoft though!

    Very lame website style though.

The coolest thing is it is "founded in Berlin". So presumably not an American company. Maybe it'll be a "GmbH".

  • but they're all at home at Eglin now.

  • hmm perhaps the writer's somewhat well-concealed fetish.

  • Oops all the writer's barely disguised fetish!

  • That's super cool!

  • lmao it really is just 3 r's, except r is p I guess.

  • lmao it's really got the three r's for emphasis in there. I wonder what it looked like in Russian.

  • I think the first step is become a "network engineer". If you wouldn't consider yourself that already then there's your first step that should keep you busy for a while. The rest should make sense once you've done that.

I assume it's a lot of stuff with BGP and other communication protocols for managing networks. There's lots of open source software you can use, but configuring it gets really hairy like all network configuration.

  • It's a good fight, but I think people should also get used to being surveilled and know what to do when you don't want to be surveilled. This stuff isn't new and it isn't going away just because you blocked or passed some legislation or because the police pinky promised not to use it.

The US and other western countries already have a global surveillance system and they're always developing new surveillance tools. That has never stopped or slowed down. It seems more useful to talk about countering surveillance, and that's definitely more useful to most of the people the US uses new technology against. Stopping some surveillance program in New Orleans isn't going to do anything for surveillance against Palestinians (or anyone else in the Middle East, who are the most surveilled people in the world, by the West).

  • There's still no real opposition to any of this though. People still talk about "Democrats this, elected officials that, constitutional rights, call your representative, sign a petition, Trump Trump Trump, blah blah blah". I don't think there's really a large number of people who are completely done with these institutions and organizations. They're just begging to be brought back in by politicians saying the right things. How many times do I have to hear people blame literally everything the US does on "Donald Trump", as if he has dictatorial control over the military and everything else. There's no discussion of military leadership or other state institutions being bad. Once a Democrat gets back in, everyone will forgive and forget. And then we can all sing Deutschland Uber Alles and enjoy our imperial superprofits knowing we did our part.

  • No I get the feeling that they're who they are and doing what they want to do, not because they feel betrayed.

  • A new Deutschland Uber Alles moment every month from now on.

  • To squelch any organic discontent and opposition to the US ruling class.

  • This is such an epidemic on reddit. That is, people in left-wing spaces always talking about "Americans aren't doing this, Americans aren't doing that, why won't anybody do something". Like you said, that's US, that's YOU as socialists or whatever. Who the hell else is supposed to change things? DSA/PSL/FRSO/Code-Pink/Samidoun/whatever are the opposition in the US. There is no other "adult in the room" that you can just whine at and have things fixed. There are no official rules. There is no bigger plan. What we have now is what exists.

Was listening to the most recent ChapoTrapHouse episode and they do the same crap. Endlessly complaining about Democrats. Like what do you want Democrats to do? You hate them. They're evil. Why are you complaining that they're not doing something you know they aren't going to do? (It's because they need something to talk about on a podcast, I get it, whatever)

Feels like bad news that the Trump oval office thing is going to be about some nonsense Space Force thing. Seems like a really bad fake cover for whatever it's going to actually be about?

There would set in an era of the blackest reaction in all the capitalist and colonial countries, the working class and the oppressed peoples would be seized by the throat.
