  • Like a prairie dog

  • Beyond that, if you are serving webpages with data on them, you don't get to decide what people do with those pages. They can't stop search engines from scraping

  • Unfortunately Lemmy is a lot more ephemeral than Reddit. If a post here gets deleted, it and the comment thread are basically gone. On Reddit deletion simply hides the post unless the post was of something illegal for Reddit to host. I really miss that behaviour.

As a result, I doubt Lemmy will ever become a valuable backlog of information like Reddit.

  • Images need contrast to be viewable. This reminds me of the Captain Disillusion video about the wristband that projected a screen onto a human wrist.

  • Honestly the only hope will be if there is a Linux nerd in the IT shop who is willing to make the case for OP from the sysadmin side of the fence. If you don't have someone batting for you in that corner, there's basically no hope.

Source: I've been using Linux at work in a Windows centric org for 5 years. Only reason is because a blessed nerd in my local IT support shop was on my side when I started there.

  • "This message really needs to be passionate and demonstrate my emotional investment, I'd better have a text generation algorithm do it for me"

  • That's because they are psychological warfare. They don't need to be liked because the goal isn't to create a positive association with the product, it's to brainwash people into thinking they need the product

  • 😬

  • Someone tell Technology Connections about this! I recall he made a couple of videos where he said he hoped for this exact thing to be invented

  • Is that a lamb wearing a wool sweater? It's cute, but that's a bit like a human wearing a sweater made of human hair.

  • I'm not sure, I think it may use an FB account. But you could make one specifically for this one use-case and then nuke your IG account.

  • If the only thing you use it for is chat, I think you can chat with instagram users on FB messenger instead, which you can then heavily restrict in terms of the OS permissions you give to it.

  • I'm a pro TTRPG think-abouter... Or a pro Pathfinder prepper.

  • Not financial advice, but what I'd do is just put it in a medium-high risk ETF. Something that should turn a decent gain in the long term but has some real underlying fundamentals unlike crypto.

  • Nothing's value fluctuates with itself. Money supply is controlled through interest rates in modern economies because it works better than directly controlling the money supply. Your comment betrays an unsurprising lack of understanding of the most basic concepts of economics. You're just parroting some talking points you've heard from techbros.

  • Newsflash: currencies shouldn't wildly fluctuate in value. The fact that people use it like a stock market investment, (and an idiotic one at that, since there is no underlying business), is exactly why it has failed to be a currency.

  • The Wire

  • Goes to show that security through obscurity is no security at all.
