  • I used to unironically be low-key proud of my googling skills. Before google got so crummy, at least.

  • Honestly, this comment and the link to a separate URL specifically for our kind was the first time I have felt negative towards DDG. Clearly whoever wrote that had gone through a couple of passes of softening the language because they were overly defensive toward the no-AI crowd.

Maybe make the 96% crowd the default and the 4% option opt-in.

  • Cigar bar and a haberdasher?

  • God I forgot about that. Windows makes me so mad.

  • One time I crossed the street to make it absolutely clear I wasn’t following this woman. About 10 seconds later she crossed the street, then looked back and saw me, got startled like a cartoon cat, and sprinted off.

Sometimes things just don’t work out.

  • I was at a BBQ place the other day and the most expensive thing on their menu was pork ribs + two sides for $23. Waiter was all excited “On Wednesdays we have beef ribs, you have to try it!” Tried it and was pretty good. Get the bill and it was $70 not including the sides, total was $95 before tip. At no point was the price disclosed to me before ordering.

Maybe if I had Kratos’ grit I would have just walked out.

  • I’ve heard people say Taco Bell is so greasy it gives them the shits, but I just don’t think that’s objectively true. You open up the classic bean burrito or taco and if anything it’s too dry, you need the sauce just to level it out. I’ve never actually known someone to have bathroom issues after taco bell. Real life experience just doesn’t agree with the joke.

I heard someone posit that people who say that are reacting to beans because they don’t normally get much fiber and their body can’t handle the sudden influx.

That said, taco bell isn’t good for the most part.

  • You get me.

  • I was never heavy into Dilbert, but I remember it fondly for pointing out how bullshit capitalism is in so many relatable ways. Then, years later, seeing him in the news for far right nonsense was so jarring.

  • I have a long sleeve shirt that says “Sun’s out, guns out”. A couple of weeks back I saw my 8 yo niece silently sounding it out across the table followed by a withering look of “What does that mean? That’s stupid.” Didn’t want to interrupt her mom to explain myself and just took the hit to my uncle cred.

  • Got pulled off all of my R&D projects and told by the CEO in a meeting with all of the team leaders (who enthusiastically agreed) to focus entirely on this one project as it was critically important and mandatory whether we liked it or not before we could go to market with our product. Said OK, got it ready in record time, none of the managers wanted to approve testing. Got told a generic “We need more info.”

Fleshed out everything I could. Did all sorts of bench top testing with full reports, did thorough budget analysis for the entire thing, a complete gantt chart with every contingency accounted for.

Two years later I’m in the latest of god only knows how many approval meetings with management. I’ve dialed back how much I expect out of them and I’m just trying to get an official project initiation form signed so at least I have a record of them acknowledging the project’s existence. One of them asks, for the nth time, “Why do we need to do this again?”

Boss looks at me expectantly, like “Yes, why do we need to do this?” as if I was the one who put myself on the project. I said “I can forward you the email where you told me to drop everything and work on it. If you changed your mind I’m more than OK to drop it and work on something else, but I refuse to hold even one more meeting to get agreement that I should even be working on this.”

He says “I think we just need more information.” I ask “Such as?” knowing full well there wasn’t a single more thing I could add. “We just need more information.” All of the team leaders just stared at me. So I quit on the spot and walked out.

Talked to a friend who still worked there and they still haven’t moved forward with that project years later, and the governing body still refuses to allow sale of the product until they do. It’s a 2 year timeline for testing so I have no idea what they are thinking. It’s only $100,000 too, they paid me more to try and get approval for two years than it would have cost to do it in the first place.

  • I made an account just to know when PAX tickets went on sale, but I still feel dirty.

  • Parent: Don’t have kids. They are awful and will ruin your life.

    Only child: 👀

  • “Pack it up, space is cancelled.”

    “What, why?”

“We left you alone for a week and now every square inch of this planet is completely covered in factories. It’s unlivable. We’ll have to get the Planet Crafter guy to terraform a new planet and start over.”

  • There are lots of stories like Last Starfighter where someone is recruited through video games for some fantastical job and some General or something is like “You have the highest score ever, only you can save us!” Always seemed pretty far fetched to me.

But if we were going to another galaxy and they wanted someone to lay out production infrastructure? I could totally see recruiting based on most playtime on steam for Satisfactory.

  • My math teacher in high school had one of these, though he never mentioned what it was to us. I used to stare at it off and on during class, and eventually it clicked “Oh, it’s a clock!” After that, with some intense staring, I figured out the pattern and was satisfied. Asked the teacher about it later, and apparently I had taught myself binary.

That knowledge displaced whatever he was talking about that day. Hopefully it wasn’t too important.

  • I thought the r/theempiredidnothingwrong sub was funny at first, then it stopped being ironic and I ran into a member in real life who started following me while ranting about how positive the empire was. Same with r/thanosdidnothingwrong. Did they even see the movies?
