for anyone looking for a cheap hobby, try coding, there are plenty of free resources to learn, and you can get started on almost any computer (or even an android phone!)
games! in maybe 95% of cases you can find an open alternative to some (non-game) software, but with games it’s the opposite.
i would say that the main proprietary softwares i still use, are video games

IIRC it’s not open source
i use simplex with people i used sms with before, and matrix for everything else
it would be nice, especially for users like me, who only use lemmy on mobile
