By making smaller tools you’re allowing for a shell scripting distinction to exist where without it you would have a lot more specialized tools that do “more” but don’t integrate well. Kind of like the webbrowser.

Choice of language is part of the design, but it’s probably more “runtime” than the language itself as it could just be a spec with multiple implementations.

Bigger is more comfortable to sleep in I guess and can hold more personal items. :P

I don’t think straight paths was the norm until it was required by things like trains and highways.

Probably will happen when the benefits of maintaining a separate kernel fall away. Same way Wine has made win32 a potential future API that all games target, but no platform supports natively. (Not yet though it’s a prediction.)

Yeah. I would love to see some diversity. I suspect the biggest issue is centralization makes things so much easier to navigate and the experience more streamlined. However sadly substantially more commercial.

Link aggregators and short form text platforms have been displacing forums for decades. Probably because we are more receptive towards being advertised to than being mused / argued to.

Merging probably has more value as people would understand the edge cases, with generated regexp it would be harder for someone to confidently understand the edges without having a deeper understanding of the algorithm and data set.
