Formerly known as arc@lemm.ee / server shuts down end June 25

  • It's like a slippery slope of stupid. If they wanted kids to not see porn, or social media, they could have mandated ISPs, mobile operators and Apple / Google implement parental controls on < 18 accounts and provide parental control software for family accounts. Adults or families who did not explicitly opt in to this law would be fully exempt from it.

  • Yes ears are different. And eyes. And preconceptions. That is subjectivity. If you want to know what is actually better you need to eliminate those biases. e.g. in audio the standard is an A/B test where the test plays audio from 2 sources at the same volume through the same headset and the recipient has to choose which is best without knowing anything else. Done properly you'll know if there is a measurable, objective difference between the two sources. Double blind is even better.

The issue for audiophiles is that this is not the way things are done. More often they're sold snake oil - hyper expensive audio cables, beech wood knobs, concrete turn table bases etc. Things that do precisely do fuck all to improve audio quality except in their imaginations.

  • Exactly. Open source is fine when it suits them but not fine when it doesn't.

  • Tangy pickle yes. Branston, piccalilli. Or pickled onions, relish, or somesuch.

  • The pickle is probably the new aspect. Farm workers have obviously been eating cheese, bread, pasties, cold meats etc. since forever.

  • Nah, just a pint of beer

  • The way audiophiles tell sound quality is 99.99% subjectivity and 0.01% objectivity.

  • Try a ploughmans meal - bread, cheese and pickle. Awesome as a lunch.

  • A lazy supermarket special - a roast chicken in a bag and a baguette roll picked up on the way to the checkout. We've all been there and I'm sure it makes a passable meal, but cooking is a skill everyone should endeavour to be proficient in.

  • Epstein had other email addresses like jeevacation@gmail.com. It largely doesn't matter other than it being kind of stupid to be using a US based cloud email server when the warrants come in.

  • The point I'm making is Gmail is in the cloud and the feds got all the logs. Encryption is one way to protect email. Another is use a server in another jurisdiction. But neither is comparable to Signal.

  • The fact that all these communications were pulled from GMail and presumably known to law enforcement for years shows its not signal.

  • Locked

    Rent is theft

  • I can agree with some arguments about the rental market, or laws about rent protection / rights. But rent in itself is not theft. Somebody wanting to live in somebody else's property whether it's for the night, a week or a year has to pay for it, or go buy their own place to stay in.

  • Not everywhere can wean itself off, but the "big three" cloud compute companies arent the only shows in town. And of course there is a multitude of free and open source replacements for commercial software with companies willing to provide support.

  • Attention whore finds out.

  • I would not be surprised at all if they'd have a backdoor way to filch data, or the key with which to decrypt backed up data.

  • Like I said, Britain didn't function in a vacuum. Fish and chips is still a uniquely British thing however.

  • Yes all those other things are distinctly British. Britain didn't function in a vacuum and I'm sure there are influences to everything. But if you eat a British pork pie you absolutely know what it is. Same for fish and chips. Same for all those things.

Since we're comparing to Italy where do you think tomatoes came from? Do you think pasta wasn't independently invented in many places? Do you think olive oil, or bread, ragus, salted pork etc weren't also done elsewhere?

  • Definitely - foods like British / Scottish / Irish / Ulster fry, pork pies, bangers & mash, fish & chips, Sunday roast (carved meat, roast potatoes, yorkshire puds), shepherd's pie, beef wellington to name a few. Plenty of deserts too.

A Sunday roast / carvery is basically what Americans get when they order prime rib. The cut of meat is slightly different due to different classifications but for all intents and purposes it's a Sunday rib roast. For some bizarre reason in the US it's regarded as fine dining with a price 4x as much as it would be for a better Sunday roast meal / carvery in a British pub. Over two decades ago I went to dine in a Lawry's Prime Rib in Chicago - big mistake - massively overpriced for what it was.
