For all your owl related needs!

  • I'm watching it on a Canadian stream, so the commercials feel strange. I get the Canadian propaganda instead of the American stuff, people are saying "zed" instead of "zee", etc.

No owls in the game, so go hawks.

I looked for pics of owls playing with footballs today, but there were just a few videos, which are a pain to convert, and different people's own Superb Owl events, which are too specific to share here. They'll probably all come in tomorrow 😔

The Green Day opener was fine, but looking at them reminds me I'm old.

  • While it is a boreal owl, it is not a Boreal Owl.

  • It is a good one! SEOs are so fun.

  • Sky-cats and land-owls share a lot of personality traits 😊

  • Napping Screeches are so cute 🥰

I wish I could sleep as well as they look to!

  • Thank you!

  • "This castle isn't big enough for the both of us!"

That goose has built a very fluffy nest. Do you know what type of goose it is?

Best of luck to them. I hope they make it safely.

  • Every bit counts! Good luck! 🦎

  • I can never get enough -wls!

    That one indeed looks superb.

  • I volunteer at a wildlife rehab clinic. I don't get to treat the animals, but we get to do all the other work. I feed them, clean their area, check them to make sure their recovery is going well, we weigh them, prep various food mixes and formulas. There's a ton of housekeeping like dishes, laundry, and sterilizing crates. I'll also greet people that arrive with animals and grab one of the staff to get the intake started.

We also have events where I've directed cars where to park, ran games for the kids, and answered animal questions. I got put on the open house planning group so I will help plan and build new activities, and if we we're able to get a new owl ambassador by then, I will run meet and greet things with it. I also got asked to help design some new shelters due the various raptors.

Our shifts are 4 hours, one day a week, from April through September, but I've been participating in random things over the winter.

I like working with animals because most of their injuries are caused by humans, and they are unable to advocate for themselves. I get to work with amazing people and see a ton of rare animals most people don't even know we have. It can be difficult to see severely injured animals, have a lot die on you, to see people crying bringing in hurt animals, especially little kids, but there is also the reward of seeing animals recover and return to their homes.

I'm mainly there for raptors, but the most touching story was a little boy found a bumble bee with a damaged wing. He took it to his parents and he wanted to help it. They dialed us up and he asked if we could fix his bee. We can often fix butterfly wings, but bees are too tiny, and he was near the end as it was, but we set that bee up in a terrarium with soft bedding and half an orange, and for the rest of his days, we took care of that bee like any other animal we'd get through our doors.

  • Owls seem to have the ability to learn where they blend in best. The more they're able to hide from animals that don't like them during the day, the better rest they get.

  • They have a great shape and expressiveness for it.

A stop motion Saw Whet was also the star of the Disney short movie "An Almost Christmas Story" if you haven't seen it. The lost little owl teams up with a lost little girl to find their respective parents.

It was inspired by a real Saw Whet that was living in the Rockefeller tree, and eventually dubbed, Rocky.

Rocky was rescued and rehabbed, and then ultimately released back where the tree came from.

  • I'm a huge fan of feather close ups!

We generally seem to think of feathers as just feathers, but there are many different types that serve different functions for the bird and they look and act totally different.

It can be like looking at magnified snowflakes, looking at their intricate and distinct structures.

  • I looked up what a rake is, and it honestly doesn't seem like a bad anthropomorphizing of a Shortie.

    They look a little dangerous.

They definitely love a good chase.

They might not always be around. (Somewhat migratory)

They're focused solely on the object of their desires. (Usually food)

The males make grand gestures. (They do high, acrobatic dives while clapping their wings to win a lady owl's attention.)

They get in fights. (With each other and other raptors over food)

Lots of people seem to recommend people keep away from rakish characters, and we should always keep a respectful distance from owls.
