For all your owl related needs!

  • I miss WFH so much. 🥺

  • No universal healthcare for when they shoot you in the face with pepper balls or whomp you to a pulp with nightsticks...

  • 'Ominous Owl'

An embassy of owls stared down at the little hazel pixie 'What is it that you seek?' They hooted somberly, with all six pairs of unblinking, golden eyes fixed upon her.

So claims this facebook post featuring about 50 of the artist's images by a fan.

That took some digging! She has a ton of bautiful and whimsical stuff though, so it was worth it!

  • I do too. I see some people try to say they're used as part of their camouflage, but they seem way too small for that. I think they're more for emoting. They do help with looking angry and surprised!

  • The slowness is a little better now that I know it isn't me. We just don't have a large enough userbase to even out whatever causes the slump for a lot of people here.

I do wish we had a more passionate commenting culture by now. Or at least some more on fun topics. I know people are still here, because they're all over the grumpy news and politics threads! 😅 I don't know if I want that particular crowd in here, but there's always people saying they want politic and US news free spaces, but I like to think we have something for everyone here and very minimal politics, so where are they at?!

I'm still having fun, but I post here to interact with you all. I can read by myself all I want already. Growing the community and learning about you all and where you're all from and your languages and cultures is what I like to get back in exchange for the owl goodness. Nobody needs to be a subject expert to talk with me here. Ask all the noob questions you want, make a joke, make a reference, I like just about all of it as long as you're here to have fun.

I'm excited to be going back to the animals. Still waiting for my rabies titer so I can handle those animals, so hopefully that comes soon so I can hold raccoons and foxes. Also still need to finalize some ideas for my owl station at open house.

I got diagnosed with pretty bad sleep apnea in January. I was falling asleep at work and getting scarily tired while driving, and I just haven't had much energy for my hobbies, so I've been falling behind on my music and planning for the event. Everyone is really dragging their feet on getting me my CPAP so I can actually sleep, so that's been making everything extremely difficult. Hopefully in the next couple weeks that will be handled and I can get back in the swing of things.

Well, I didn't mean to talk so much, but no one else is listening, so apologies on taking it all out on you! 😇

  • Huh, we always just called them all pine trees. Thanks for getting me to look up the difference! I'll have to pay more attention next time I come across one.

For anyone else that may not be aware:

    From Fine Gardening

Telling the difference among conifers can be tricky. To me, they are all Christmas trees. But calling them such doesn't really mark me as a discerning gardener. There is, however, a quick way to tell these three common conifers apart.

Look for the number of needles that come out of the same spot on a twig. If a twig bears needles in groups of two, three, or five, you can safely call it a pine. If the twig carries its needles singly, it's a good bet you've got a fir or a spruce. Pull off a needle, and roll it between your fingers. If it feels flat and doesn't roll easily, it's a fir. If the needle has four sides and, thus, rolls easily between your fingers, it's a spruce.

There looks to be much more differences between cones, so I'll save that for another day! 😅

  • I'll have to get by on 2 out of 3. I'm always too hot for the flannel. 🥵

  • I keep seeing all the local rescues posting all their various babies coming in. I'm back in action on the 15th to get a head start before the new volunteers come in April.

I'll probably share the egg story on Wed, as we're in the time of year where the chatter feels dead in here. I always get bummed sharing something I think is awesome and it feels like nobody sees it. I get so bored posting all this stuff and nobody comments. At least I know by now it isn't me doing something wrong, Lemmy just seems to go stagnant around this time.

  • I'd say anyone not planning to get screwed by this administration is doing their people a disservice.

I am happy to see the Scouts give some push back. It frankly seems more than some leaders/countries are willing to do.

  • Other than their initial confrontation, there haven't been any further ones, have there? I'm going both groups are busy enough they'll have no need to worry about the other. They ultimately both have to do what they think is best for their families overall, and that can seem quite sad or cruel to us.

I have a good post for sometime this week about a pair of animal ambassadors with dud eggs and how the rehab center still lets them feel like good parents. It involves some sneakiness and trickery, but everyone wins in the end!

  • Yup, screw any non-discriminatory animal control. I work at a wildlife rescue and we have to pull birds and all kinds of animals off those things, and it's just plain cruel to rodents as well.

  • From reading other articles and pieces from people associated with Scouts, while they don't get any money from the government, that isn't to say they don't get perks.

$1/yr leases for public land, access to property/equipment, logistical support/medical staffing for the Jamboree, jet flyovers, etc that help them stretch their funds or provide things they would t be able to access without the government's support.

The Jamboree is a 10 day event this July, so all that staffing provided by the gov is probably a huge expense, and if Hegseth pulled all that now or in the future, they'd be screwed. So essentially, this is coercion to get what they want.

  • Great job to both mommas for sticking it out despite the interloper!

It reminds me of cartoons/family sitcoms where two people are arguing and divide the room with a line to separate them only to have further drama ensue.

Best of luck to both families! 🦉❤️🪿

  • Animals that get rehabbed need to be releasable, so getting used to humans is not in their best interest. The only handling we do with them is to treat them and is kept to a minimum.

I wouldn't say that any of the animals appreciate us, but some are calmer than others, and some will occasionally visit after release or even bring friends back looking for food or a safe spot to spend the day/night.

Some of the young released hawks will hang around as they develop their hunting skills, vultures will bring their new friends back to roost for a bit, we have a blue jay that has stayed for years that acts like it owns the place and will steal from the food we're bringing out to current residents.

But for the most part, they seem to feel like most of us would, were we to be abducted by aliens, probed, studied, and put on exhibit for a few weeks or months. We'd be wondering what was going on the whole time because we don't understand their species whatsoever, and we'd be glad when we finally got dropped back off on Earth and try to put the whole ordeal behind us, even if they never did anything aggressive to us and cured our diseases we never even knew we had.

And that's what we want! We want to be a brief, hopefully minimally traumatic interruption of their lives. Our goal is to put them right back where they were before whatever event brought them in to us. And that includes their previous distrust of humans. Over 90% of their injuries are due to us or our pets or property. So keeping them grumpy with us is one of the best things we can do for them.

It takes some mental adjustment on my part to tell myself them fighting me and biting me, and being uncooperative pains in my butt is the best thing I could experience, but I'm here for their benefit, not my own. I'm still happy to get all the time up close with them though and learning about all these amazing animals.

  • Of course! It's not something most of us need to know on a regular basis and it can get confusing over which group handles what aspects of animal care. For instance rehabs would normally be able to treat waterfowl, but avian influenza is so bad now, we aren't allowed to have any on site, so those cases are all handled by the state until we hear otherwise.

  • I have nothing bad to say about state wildlife employees, but their mission is not necessarily always the same as that of a rehab clinic.

They play a role in certifying and regulating what we do at a rehab, but from my understanding they are there to see nature take its course while not having negative impacts to the citizens of the state. Rehabbers are here to save every animal possible.

This causes some people to find us anywhere from harmless to annoying to seeing us as interfering with nature. It's personal and political like any other matter once you dig down enough. But a rehab's job is to save every animal life that we legally can, and I think that difference is significant in certain scenarios.

Maybe the best comparison I can give is how a city pound or SPCA will help rehome some animals vs a no-kill cat or dog specific rescue that will try to save every animal they take. They're not bad, they're still helping, but they have a different mission.
