  • It's from the start of Mickey and the magic beanstalk. The voiceover really ups the misery by talking about how they're destitute and their spirits are broken, and Donald and Goofy both go delirious from the hunger at one point.

Of course, after that tear jerker the typical Disney magic sets in again and the whole thing is largely played for laughs, but those first few minutes are intensely sad IMHO.

  • I agree with the message, but I just can't watch that clip of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy being so destitute and downtrodden without getting intensely sad. To whomever hasn't seen the original animation this is from, prepare to feel worse than the opening of "Up" when you finally look this up.

  • How can anyone look at the complete and utter shitshow down south and think "yeah, I wanna be part of that"? The US is in declime by just about any accepted metric, assuming you can ignore all the blatant human rights abuses being conducted out in public long enough to even look at metrics right now.

There should be no reasonable argument for a Canadian to want to get annexed other than sheer, unadulterated, racism, transphobia, or fascism.

And if you support any of those things, I think you're the one who should get annexed personally by being relocated to the down south trash heap.

  • "Peace through strength" has such an aweful ring to it. From the first recorded historical use forward it has been used by empires using rethoric to whitewash their aggression.

  • Great reframing device put forth by the author, even though the article hammers it a bit much for my tastes.

The larger question however remains unanswered: How do we motivate people to do their part in keeping everyone safe? The suggestions in the article have either already backfired (vaccination mandates at schools, works, etc), or are only really effective if a disease has already started to claim lives (the "fear" method the author rightfully dislikes).

I'm honestly wondering how we can ever get that antivax genie back into the bottle it escaped from. Perhaps letting some virusses run rampant every now and again to remind the public of the risks is the price we'll need to pay 😕

  • Counterargument: The Solterra is by far the cheapest if you account for the federal and provincial rebates here in Canada, on top of the massive price cut Subaru gives you on the models it has sitting in their lots and the fact you can lease them at 0.49% APR.

Honestly, the only downside to our Solterra has been the slow fast chasing, which make no major difference for us because our daily commute fits easily within the car's range. Even in winter.

OP - Don't get discouraged by some of the negative reviews and comments about the Solterra. If you are able to get a good deal on one, the biggest complaint most reviewers have (paraphrased "it's not worth it at this price") falls away and you're left with a very nice to drive and capable car for daily commutes and just about anything else that isn't 2+ hour road trips.

[Edit] For the record: This is our fourth EV, after a second gen Leaf, Fiat 500e, and Hyundai Kona E.

  • At this point it's practically the official dub. As it should be, because it's hilarious.

  • Wouldn't it be an absolute riot of a "leopards ate my face" situation if he ends up croaking because of this?

To clarify: I don't wish any harm on his grandchildren, but this man's level of willful ignorance and sheer recklessness makes it hard for me to sympathize with any negative outcome he may suffer personally.

  • This is the exact shit the Republicans down south have pulled for years and it's pernicious. Once the seeds of doubt have been planted about the fairness of our elections, it opens the door to all kinds of shenanigans from voter discouragement to full-on Jan 6 style coup attempts, or even Russian-style "liberations".

We need to stamp this out right now before it gets weaponized against us

  • Island full of racists, several cults, and whatever the Telvanni are into that's not just straight up racial superiority, slavery, and eugenics. Plus some really fucked up gods.

  • Depends on your expectations. If you okay mainly eSports titles at 1080p it would've probably been quite sufficient still.

But I agree it's a stretch as an all-rounder system in 2025. My 3090 is already showing signs of it's age, a card that's two generations older would certainly be struggling today.

  • While that's largely true, it also oversimplifies the realities of the conflict.

Without American aid the Russians wouldn't have been able to repel the Germans nearly as effective as they did (if at all), and without D-day splitting the war into two fronts, Russian losses on the way to Berlin would've been significantly higher.

That all said, Trump's statement is obviously horseshit and a complete disservice to the rest of all the allied forces.

  • We're quite jealous of your voting system here in upside-down Australia. We just had another "vote strategic" moment that resulted in all of the minor parties losing influence just to keep the conservatives out of power. Trudeau's biggest lasting failure will be his inability to actually pass vote reform like he promised, and FPTP will eventually result in us graduating from US-light to full on US-two-party-ism.

  • And how, pray tell, is a "real" firearm going to help defend against the most technologically advanced army in the world, who can take you out from half a planet away without you ever seeing anyone until you are ginsu-bladed in half (reference: https://www.pcmag.com/news/us-used-drone-carrying-knife-missile-to-kill-al-qaeda-chief)?

We don't need more firearms in personal hands when it comes to our national defence, we need alliances, a better standing army, and probably some form of nuclear deterrence. Thinking you'll make any meaningful difference with your personal firearm and a couple of hours on the gun range is the exact same magical thinking 2FA nuts keep using while the US government takes their rights and freedoms away.

  • While I agree with your main point (which to me sounds like "don't let your cats outside as they're an invasive species and will do serious damage to the local ecosystem"), suggesting to kill them on sight is a bit harsh and won't make you many allies.

We have much more humane options to capture, return, and if needed rehouse cats. Remember that these objectively invasive animals are also people's companions, and that some folks simply don't know better than the old belief that "cats should roam".

  • If your machine has a TPM chip, you can bypass the other requirements to upgrade to 11 with a simple registry edit. Not sure if that's an option for you, but it saved parents' older Surface device from the landfill.

  • If Bethesda handles SkyWind the same as SkyBlivion I am actually quite stoked to play a UE5 version of Morrowind....

  • Actual Microsoft rollout practices 🤣
