  • Most arguments for surveillance (and all authoritarianism) boil down to either saving the children or fighting an eternal enemy. Obviously OpenAI does surveil all its users, but the "for the children" argument would hurt their user numbers (I wanted to say it would hurt their profits, but they don't profit off of any user). Thus, it's "but China" instead.

    There's a ton of "wellness" hardware and services that are being thrown at customers who are entirely clueless. But if the garbage service is something they can afford, and a trip to the hospital or something they can't, they might choose the garbage service.

It is interesting that in this case, the differentiation between "AI data center" and "non-AI data center" is almost as important a distinction between "bad chemicals" and "chemicals" in general.
