  • The AI absolutely doesn’t get the point.

The art is supposed to mimic an action figure case, complete with the person drawn with more specular lighting than they should to look kinda plasticy, and all of the components have an outline because they are held in plastic packaging.

The AI of the person looks more like one of Apple’s nightmare emoji than a toy, the cat isn’t even in a segment of the container, some of the containers are broken, and the details I mentioned above are completely missing. Not to mention all the wrong text, or that the box looks nothing at all like an action figure box.

The human art isn’t that good, but the AI one isn’t even coherent.

  • Some particular reasons why I’d recommend Minecraft for this:

    • it’s very easy to get started, but there’s a lot of depth if you get into it
    • its pretty slow-paced
    • its a multiplayer game where someone of a much higher skill level and someone of a much lower skill level can play together without the noob player feeling that they are holding the advanced player back
    • if you set the difficulty to peaceful it’s hard to die, and it’s impossible to fully “lose”. You can also turn on keepinventory.
    • it’s a very open-ended game where you can come up with your own goals, which makes it something that everybody can find fun in their own way
    • if they do get into it, it’s a good segue into a wide variety of other games. Just figure out what part of Minecraft they enjoy. You can also extend Minecraft by playing with mods.
    • literally any foss player vs. what MS offers - be it VLC, SMPlayer, MPV, anything is better than windows built in crap

FFMPEG is an open source command line tool and software library for audio and video encoding. You’ll find it mentioned in the credits of just about any video playing software ever, but you can also just go use it for free.

  • I like GIMP but find Inkscape impossible to use

  • Terraria is kinda like 2D Minecraft but with a longer but more linear progression path instead of being just a more Freeform sandbox. Kinda like some Minecraft modpacks.

  • Obligatory “fuck Notch” but I really liked the idea of 0x10c when it was announced.

  • That’s not an outlandish amount of storage. You can get more than that for $200.

Oh whoops got the instructions mixed up

  • You can’t gift, sell, share, or play that game on a new device once the servers shut down.

  • The games came complete out-of-the-box. No day 1 patches that still didn’t fix all the game breaking bugs on release. No DLC, required online connectivity, or kernel-level anti-cheat. No worry that the game will stop working once the company that sold it decides to turn the servers off.

  • I’ve worked on a library that’s Python because the users of said library are used to Python.

The original version of the project made heavy use of numpy, so the actual performance sensitive code was effectively C++ and fourtran, which is what numpy is under the hood.

We eventually replaced the performance sensitive part of the code with Rust (and still some fourtran because BLAS) which ended up being about 10x faster.

The outermost layer of code is still Python though.

  • It lacks the main benefit of a digital game: not needing to keep the card with you.

It lacks the main benefit of a physical game: not needing an internet connection, which also means these fake cartridges will stop working once servers shut down

It captures the vibe of having a physical card, which I appreciate, but that’s about it. Otherwise it’s worthless.

  • Somehow I’m thankful this image is AI generated for once.

  • They can call it Trump Train if they want I just want a train that will get me between Chicago and NYC cheaper than a plane but faster than a car.

  • I certainly won’t lol. I’m actually running a custom build of the mobile app with some tweaks.

  • Built on Moonlight! That’s what I use already lol.

  • For the most part it’s best to use system provided sorting implementations, but somebody has to write those implementations, so every once in a while somebody needs to do it (in practice by looking up a reference implementation of course).

But also it’s good to understand things like big O scaling and why we use quicksort rather than a naive insertion sort and when to use quick sort vs merge sort or some other form of stable sort.

  • Can confirm I did it like 3 times before I just started installing 3rd party Hall effect switches.
