  • Used to have a credit limit that was like double my annual income. Surely they knew there was no way I could afford even the interest alone if I came anywhere close to maxing out cards...

  • Aren't you the one implying they do? If April comes before May and April is the start of Summer, then May should also be Summer.

  • Gerrymandering can't help with Governor, Senator, or presidential elections, so voter suppression is is also needed and used!

  • Surprisingly, over 50% of energy production right now (like this minute, not a long-term average) in Texas is Solar+Wind. Nuclear is another 6%. Still means we should at least double solar+wind production, but I think storage is something that's quite lacking currently, so as the sun set, fossil fuel use spikes up (wind is still like 40% of the power at night though).

  • "Bear" is a sex?

  • I think I had someone ask why I was necroing something because I had responded to something that had been posted earlier that or the night before. Maybe it was older than 24 hours, but regardless it was a weird experience.

  • I still like my more expensive carbon road bike and still happy with my purchase although it mostly collects dust now since most of my riding lately has been commutes by ebike because its too far and hot this time of year for an acoustic bike. Before I got the ebike, I did occasionally make the commute on my road bike, but I'd have to get there at least an hour early to cool off, clean up, etc. No way I'd ever consider doing that ride to work on my cheap aluminum hybrid: it would take too long and I'd be too tired to do my job.

Ebikes were still in their infancy when I got my road bike (and the equivalent to my road bike costs like twice as much as I paid now). Would have cost much more. But I didn't purchase my road bike for commuting: I already had my hybrid then and my commute was so short that it was faster than a car without traffic. It was for the hobby.

  • "in two cases a transsexual mother gained custody of her adopted children after a divorce"

My non-birth lesbian mom got full custody of us (birthmom lost all custody) more than 2 decades ago, but I wouldn't say that its evidence that the Texas government wasn't homophobic at the time. Would be weird if I read something like this about Texas in a decade referencing my parent's custody battle as evidence of Texas being ahead of the curve compared to other southern states in terms of homophobia: it was just a single judge's decision and birthmom clearly wasn't fit to be a parent.

  • Because obviously all compliments are actually just insults in disguise! /s

I put /s, but like, that's often my first assumption. IME, often compliments have been mostly been intentionally a back-handed insult, are putting themselves down in the process, or they're trying to give a genuine compliment but its about something I dislike about myself and therefore feels insulting despite the intentions.

  • Is there gonna be a loser's bracket for this tournament?

  • Can we just have the peanut butter?

  • I think in the UK, that's the limit on ebike motors, but are considering upping it to 500W? A 750W motor can still struggle to go up a steep hill with pedal assist, so I find it weird that's even a question.

  • 25kph is slow for an accoustic bike.

  • Why would wearing sunglasses outdoors make someone look like an asshole?

  • at that point, a 2x4 is 2 inches by 4 inches.

From my understanding, as tools have gotten more precise, the raw boards have gotten slightly smaller to reach the same standard size with less waste. So, 2x4 doesn't even refer to modern unprocessed 2x4s, but rather a hypothetical unprocessed 2x4 at some point in the past.

  • Because you’re comparing a wild animal that can easily kill you with a single swipe, with a random normal person?

Can easily kill is different than likely to. Plus, the same is true of any human, but they're also much more likely to have outcomes far worse than quickly being just being killed. Its a random person in the woods, not just a *normal *person (whatever "normal" is supposed to mean). But honestly, I don't think I'd put it past many "normal" humans (men and women) to commit at least minor SV in the "right" circumstances.

I can, with 10,000,000,000% certainty tell you that way more people have vastly more ordinary, totally safe experiences with random men in their normal lives than with bears.

Sure, but I'm just as certain that women have far more experiences with SV from humans than any violence from bears. Even if they're actual survivors of bear attacks, they're likely the victim of far more SV by men.

  • Why wouldn't a reasonable person pick the bear? Plenty of people have just ordinary, totally safe experiences with bears in their normal lives. Meanwhile, they have ordinary SV committed against them by men in their normal lives. Why shouldn't they pick the group that hasn't been a constant threat to them? Its not asking you to try to pick a fight with the bear.
