Have you ever considered that the Prime Directive is not only not ethical, but also illogical, and perhaps morally indefensible?

  • It does beg the question of what about the project "requires further development" - it seemed like a pretty comprehensive plan when I looked at it.

  • The Alto project is on the "secondary" list of projects that are likely next.

  • I think Discovery handled Pike's "destiny" in the best possible way by rooting it in character.

Pike grabs that time crystal because he's dedicated to the mission, and to Starfleet. He will eventually save those cadets for the exact same reason. There doesn't have to be anything metaphysical going on there - he affirms that that's the kind of person he is, and that's why he'll end up in that situation one day, even knowing it's coming.

It makes me sad that SNW has been diluting that.

  • Or is it only a combo thing?

That seemed to be the implication. In which case, I think it might have been better to have Batel get more fully "possessed," and take the angle that she knows exactly what's going on, and what needs to be done. It would take her agency out of the episode, but...the episode didn't really give her any agency as it is.

  • I wanted to sleep on this one too see if there would be anything I would appreciate after some reflection, but...no, not really.

I thought that the way they came to understanding what was going on was a little rushed and a bit too speculative

I think this is a big part of what didn't work for me. They really wanted to get to the fireworks factory, and sidestepped most of the interesting potential in order to get there.

The extended fantasy/hallucination was the strongest part of the episode, but...it seemed to be entirely about Pike. Did Batel even experience it? The episode seemed completely uninterested in what she might be going through as she prepared to sacrifice herself.

And the conflict itself suffers from the "pah wraith problem" - I'm fine with the idea of a conflict between primordial good and evil...but it's hard to make it interesting. All you can really do is focus on how it affects the people involved, and they were only semi-successful at that.

  • It's almost as if they had something very specific they were trying to convey with the "we have to go back in time to prevent this fascist future, oops it's just the world our viewers live in" plot.

  • I did not know this, but apparently Earl Boen passed away in 2023, which would make casting...difficult.

I've liked Naveen Andrews ever since he was an underutilized breakout star on "Lost", and he has the advantage of actually being of Indian descent. I'll be very curious to see how much range he gets to show as this series winds on.

  • This episode confirmed my biggest fear: I'm bad at focusing on audio stories, and will have to choose when to listen carefully.

As far as the story goes, I'm happiest to see that they're doing some character rehab for Marla McGivers.

They don't seem to be doing similar rehab for Khan himself, which is fine by me, but they are highlighting his ability to turn on a dime and go full tyrant at the drop of a hat.

Star Trek: Khan is now available

  • It's been a pretty poorly-kept secret - an Enterprise-D set with the TNG character figs. It looks like the official announcement will finally come soon-ish.

Edit: This is the image that was leaked a while back:

  • "It becomes a profoundly difficult thing to scale that infrastructure in a way that allows you to scale growth in the retail sector," he says. "So can it work? I think it could, but it would be a very difficult and painful process to get established and to grow."

One of the Federated Co-ops, Red River Co-op, ceased grocery operations in 1983 - it wasn't until the Sobeys/Safeway merger in 2014 that they were able to pick up four of the Winnipeg locations that the new megacorp were forced to sell, and re-enter the market. They now have nine grocery locations in and around the city.

It's hard to take a lesson from that, since you can't count on those circumstances to repeat every often, but inheriting existing infrastructure certainly seems to help.

  • Well I'm happy for her - it sounds like it's a good thing that she reconsidered her life goals, and found something more fulfilling.

  • I really think you're putting words in her mouth.

"It felt impossible to go back to that kind of a life and I didn’t want to sacrifice my time with my family" has absolutely nothing to do with the process of transferring credentials to Canada, and everything to do with the job itself. “I feel that I can be a better nurse than a physician" speaks for itself.

There are plenty of stories about the challenges of transferring credentials. This, by her own account, as quoted in this article, is not one of them.

  • If the process were easier she wouldn’t have been “led” to reassess those priorities.

How does an easier process change her conclusion of, "I would be happier as a nurse?"

  • Not exactly.

When Tretiak first arrived in Canada in December 2022, she looked into obtaining a license to practice medicine, but the complexity of the process and volume of paperwork led her to reassess her priorities.

That doesn't say she thought it was "too much." It says she decided it wasn't what she wanted to do.

You can argue that the process is too much - and it probably is, at least in places - but she pretty directly states that it led to her deciding that she didn't actually want to be a doctor, and would rather be a nurse.

  • She says she sees nursing as an opportunity to engage more deeply with patients through communication and empathy. “I feel that I can be a better nurse than a physician,” says Tretiak, who currently works in a retirement home for Ukrainian-speaking older adults.

“I had lost a lot of people already – including many of my friends – and I no longer connected my happiness to my professional goals. It felt impossible to go back to that kind of a life and I didn’t want to sacrifice my time with my family.”

I'm going to suggest we shouldn't force her to do something she doesn't want to do.

  • Sometimes, she crashes the ship!

  • On what are you basing this? Because it's not the Voyager episode.
