  • You are probably thinking of pawns. Pawns are the ones who can promote to Queen (or other pieces except king) but as far as I know there is no 1 canon on what gender pieces are so you can use your own imagination. I have heard people say how pawns are essentially trans women (pawns are male and transition to a female queen) but like I think you can make any other lore regarding gender of pieces.

    Considering that chess is a war game and historically speaking males are the ones who usually go to war, it is possible for pawns to be all male and either transition to queens or queen being gender neutral title to mean helper of king in war. Idk that is just one theory. I think, if we need to give gender to pieces, I think it would also make sense for half of the pawns pawns to be male and half of them female. Idk, use your imagination.
