  • Wing window. Little triangle in front of the main door window that opens separately. They're generally hinged at the top (middle of the hypotenuse) and bottom, so they rotate on a vertical axis. Usually, they'd just be opened by hand with a latch to hold them shut, but luxury cars would have them on a little crank like that. Often, they would open so far that they'd be angled past 90 degrees, and act as an air scoop to bring massive wind into the car as you drove. Also handy for ashing cigarettes in the winter.

  • Being unfamiliar with Spanish law or politics, is this a case of "We've investigated ourselves and found nothing wrong"?

  • I look at "expressing my feelings" like this:

My feelings are mine. They're mine to have, and mine to be responsible for. I don't need to explain them to anyone for them to be valid.

But I should explain them to certain people, so that those people don't mistake my tone or body language or whatever for something it's not. That explanation isn't for me, it's for them.

  • The problem was never Maduro "being a dictator" or "anything about drugs". It was that Maduro wouldn't "give the US Venezuela's oil".

  • They knew before Congress.

  • And then were summarily pardoned by the person who urged them to do it?

  • Yes, a couple months after I switched, my dentist told me my mouth was in much better shape.

Like I said, safer than tobacco by far, not necessarily safe.

  • When I was young, a friend and I set up ELIZA in BASIC on a TS2068. It was fun, for sure. About an hour in, it responded with "i am" - lower case, when everything we'd put in was in upper case.

This freaked us the fuck out for about a half hour.

Then I realized ... wait a minute. Everything it can possibly say is in the code somewhere. I pored over all the things we'd put in, and finally, there it was: "i am". The only mystery that still remains is how that got there.

  • Time for the other team to bring firearms.

  • Not finding that study myself here, but I'm happy to stand corrected on that.

What I did find was this

Most critically, vaporised PG efficiently abolishes influenza A virus and SARS‐CoV‐2 infectivity within airborne droplets, potently preventing infection at levels well below those tolerated by mammals. We present PG vapour as a first‐in‐class non‐toxic airborne virucide that can prevent transmission of existing and emergent viral pathogens, with clear and immediate implications for public health.

Which might explain why everyone in my family (in the house and extended) has had COVID (often more than once) and I never have.

  • There was already a system in place to clear the horse manure, the pig manure just went with it. You can fertilize with manure, less so with trash.

  • It's a lesson you learn once.

  • Not since the 50s, in the 50s. And at a much lower concentration than what vaping is.

I've been vaping for about 15 years. Don't get me wrong, vaping is far safer than inhaling tobacco smoke or putting a wad of dip in your mouth. That doesn't make it safe, and I'm unaware of any real studies on the long-term effects of vaping. I am aware of some very badly performed lab studies that were clearly designed to produce results showing how awful it is by operating vape devices in ways that no person ever would or even could. Yes, PG has a mild antiseptic effect. Yes, the flavorings used are "generally regarded as safe" (GRAS) ... for eating.

What I know anecdotally from my own experience:

    • Over time, vaping in a closed area leaves a sticky residue on everything. I'm sure my lungs are doing work to eliminate that residue that they wouldn't have to do otherwise, and I don't know the health effects of that.
    • The inside of my mouth is constantly dry and feels kind of gross. I'm sure my breath isn't great.
    • My teeth are badly stained. I avoid dark juices, as those seem to do it much worse.

All that said, I'm still glad I switched from cigarettes.

  • Yeah it's like US$1.50 for the air pump to run long enough for you to fill maybe three tires.

  • Belle Tire has free air, that's the only place I know of anymore.

  • And you didn't have to pay for air, because there was an air hose on the corner of the building you could just go use.

  • I'm pretty close to being a boomer, my in-laws are. Nobody I know has a problem with that. Careful with your ageism.
