    The problem with your logic is that you assume jurors don't have a sense of ethics and justice. If they truly don't, then forget the judiciary as a problem, because the society itself isn't going to hold up. So in that way, applying your logic here and under that assumption you are right, why bother with democracy and not trial by combat when people no longer care about acting in good will?

  • Jury nullification doesn't really exist. It's just an attempt to label something the jury decides that you believe goes against the law. The fact is, the jury is part of the law, and the jury can decide what parts of it are relevant, are enforceable in the case, and which need special considerations. Complaining about "jury nullification" is complaining about one of the fewest democratic elements in the judicial system, a system that on its own is almost completely autocratic and as such that much more susceptible to the formation of oligarchies and nepotism from within.

It's so ridiculous that this comes after all their effort from the US to ban TikTok, like, y'know you were the ones to create the precedent to ban social networks doing shit like this across international borders ... right?

  • But what is your mobility as one of its workers? What other social networks can they begin working for realistically in such a small market? Maybe that's the way to fight against Zuckerberg's and Musk's attempts to turn their networks into propaganda tools for the highest bidder, to encourage disgruntled workers to start their own social networks and then go support them as well. I would seriously consider paying for an adequately moderated ActivityPub alternate that truly respected its users, was truly transparent, focuses on high quality content, and prevented brigade agenda pushing.

  • I don't think you seriously know the lore of the Elder Scrolls and the way it usually works out, and are really projecting your own prejudices without realizing it. The Forsworn are a take on Breton mythology in The Elder Scrolls universe, and The Elder Scrolls universe is essentially all about subverting the expectation of what you thought the past really was like, what it truly was like, and the transposition of both of these into the same time frame. Hell, the whole concept of Aedra and Daedra may be a literal manifestation of this dichotomy at the "god/demon" level, "may be" because in true Elder Scrolls fashion the lore never tells you in an outright manner and just drops hints within the lore.

    Neither the Empire or the Stormcloaks were supposed to be wholly good options, the player was supposed between distinctly flawed options, where siding with the Empire might very well have been the best in an imperfect world option. I suspect that the fact that the player base was as divided as they were between the two is why they went the complete opposite end of the spectrum in Starfiled and just slapped you with the "this is what you were supposed to choose!" companion commentary.

  • The Supreme Court will be compromised for life, legislative is next but is already essentially gamed on a state by state level and a "nation undivided" indoctrination, and the executive just needs to play its part to cement the rich asshole oligarchy state. The only way to fix it is a skewed "democracy" every few years where certain votes count more than others and the population is stupid and saturated by propaganda.

  • I don't see a problem with it, it's just for show at that point. Nobody should ever be shaking the hand of a GQP member. This is not a sporting contest, stop dividing everything into winners and losers. This is your government that you have now lost for the next four years and very likely, long after, along with all the other governments it will affect internationally.

    What's astounding to me is that people think they will still have a democracy for subsequent elections. It was that bad, this was the time to act, and all that was actually manifested was resentment. It's not even just on the GQP side, people have been praising how Biden has been making this and that harder to change on day 1 - what does it matter when they will be deciding how many days they have from now on?

    The people that shouldn't have fought did under frivolous claims and the people who should have fought had snow ball fights. I get that international bad actors wanted to fuel infighting and would have jumped at the chance of something they could have claimed "b-b-but they did it too!", but did they ever consider what the alternative they are now going to have to live through is?

    I really hope I'm proven wrong, but I have almost zero faith left.

  • Just a heads up, I submitted this in World News and it got taken down because of "rule 3" even though it's as you say. It also fairly early on got brigaded by "counterpropaganda" from hexbear, and the alts coming out of the woodworks, ignoring any other community content, just to defend King Jong-un and North Korea's character was ridiculous. I guess lemmy.ml and lemmy.world have more in common than I thought. I got in contact with one of the mods and they confirmed it was wrongly removed and restored it, so it was definitely not a unanimous decision - I take my comment back.

    Budae-jjigae is literally made from hot dog sausages, and the ban is tied to maintaining the cultural divide between North and South Korea. This news shouldn't be making as much noise as it is, if it wasn't because of weighted agendas seriously getting concerned. I'm sure you are probably getting a lot of spam to coerce you.

  • I read a dictator making shitty lost in a country with a long list of shitty laws in my news feed, I don't have a problem believing it. He's done worse, it's a Google search away. It also isn't that different from things China or Russia have done to try to prevent cultures intermingling at home. Lemmy shows its hidden face when for a rather unremarkable but somewhat entertaining piece of news it immediately gets posted to a Marxist Leninist community to brigade.

    The bias on Lemmy is to defend China and Russia, even this thread was almost immediately reported to a brigading Marxist Leninist community almost the moment it was created on hexbear, never mind the Lemmy bias on the matter. It just so happens that some things require more mental gymnastics than reality can tolerate, specially when the propaganda usually used to criticize can also be applied to the side they don't want criticized. There would be no issue if this was a Biden or Trump article, and they are far from dictators. There is no problem with vilifying leaders - unless it involved those in the Marxist Leninist pantheon, apparently.

I think they've realized that if they focus on reactionary leaders in a particular country, those leaders are going to get pissed off internationally unless they focus on coordinating these sort of movements internationally. This has been happening now for a while through the typical troll factories, it's just that Musk and his capitalism sanctioned propaganda network is stepping up as well hand in hand with the new dystopian US government coming in.
