  • This is why it annoys me every time someone brings up that SMS/iMessage is a US only problem. Whilst this may be true, for a lot of us WhatsApp is no different. Particularly now that Meta owns WhatsApp.

  • Not all games just work. For sure though Proton is absolutely amazing. The only thing stopping me ditching Windows completely is my kid still plays Roblox which doesn't work on Linux.

  • I have a Pi4 that runs a couple of services to run in the house. Even this still needs regular OS patching, updated images pulling, troubleshooting etc.I ran my own mail server many years ago but I can't reliably do one anymore. Besides, death can happen at any point and I'd hate to leave my family with email mailboxes that are just gonna stop one day from something breaking or a domain not being renewed.

  • Which is fine. But self hosting has multiple complexities. It's not just a case of installing and configuring a mail server. Maintenance, security, electric costs etc just add up.

I'd sooner have working emails and leave all the management to the provider.

  • I know internally Broadcom is screwing over VMware employees with new contracts. I've heard of staff pushing back three times so far to get contracts changed.

  • I liked Skiff but moved to Proton as Skiff was still too new for me to trust at the time. Glad I went with my instinct.

Shame though when people are actively taking their privacy seriously and getting away from the major free providers.

  • Not a dumb title,.just purposely "click bait"

  • Not everyone is technically minded. Don't divert from the fact Microsoft is doing shady shit here.

  • Awesome info! I wasn't overly happy with having to use CloudFlare for just this one feature. I'll have a test with my registrar.

  • The CNAME flattening is not a regular feature of DNS, so I have to use Cloudflare. Maybe other providers do the same, but I haven't looked around. It's certainly not something namecheap offer.

I point my TLD to the dynamic DNS record and then point to other records to the TLD as CNAME records. I'm using Nginx Proxy Manager to reverse proxy traffic to different services. These all live on a Raspberry Pi 4.

  • Pi OS. It's a Pi4 after all.

  • Indeed.

  • Out of interest how are the other countries in the UK finding electric cars?

In the UK there was a bit of a boom but that's slowed considerably. The infrastructure isn't there. Electric cars are considerably more expensive and electricity is not cheap here. Until they are much cheaper than their combustion counterparts I just can't see them taking hold. I'd love to go electric but it's just not viable.

  • I stopped using Google late last year and it's pretty eye opening how much freer I feel now. Previously, any searches I made would follow me around. Make a one time search for something I'd see that being advertised later on. As a result I started searching more using private browsing. I'd often forget though and end up being tracked.

Ultimately switching to Firefox and DuckDuckGo I no longer have to do private searches. No more being followed around the internet.

Also I'm not convinced private browsing works. For example I still use it for YouTube but I noticed despite YouTube not knowing who I am, the videos on the home page include some that are very related to my usual videos. I guess they are using IP's to still deliver relatable videos.

  • I've never had prime. Whenever I look at Amazon now it's basically a local AliExpress with loads of cheaply made Chinese stuff. Amazon is not cheap anymore either. eBay is always cheaper.

  • Same. Works fine as long as it's x264 content

  • Because Lemmy has a hard-on for Linux and FOSS so loves to shit on Microsoft. I'm personally, albeit slowly, moving over to Linux but it's not been a straight forward ride that people make out that it is. I often hit an issue and just reboot into Windows to get what I need done without having to spend hours troubleshooting.

  • Lol look at your downvotes!
