  • A desktop environment is not a prerequisite for an operating system.

  • Everywhere I have worked defaults to windows but uses Linux for actually critical stuff. Apple is not even in the conversation.

  • IMO it's almost certain that Valve will go the same way as all the other big gaming and tech companies as soon as Gabe is no longer involved. I would like to believe they're immune to enshittification but I can't.

An actual open phone system similar to the openness and hardware support of desktop Linux is a better next step than Valve worship.

  • Nah, in this case the minimum viable product must have all the basic hardware features supported.

If the project can't achieve that then it's no better than the other hobbiest only Linux phones already available.

  • The rational response to grown men sexually abusing children IS outrage. You sound like you should be on a list.

  • If you're in Brisbane at all go to The Scratch near the train station in Milton

  • I think most people are ok with you choosing to not vaccinate. The problem is when you choose to inflict that decision on others.

Not vaccinating and not isolating yourself is violating everyone else's body sovereignty.

I don't care if you host diseases. I absolutely do care about you spreading them.

  • governments, companies and NGOs would come up with a standard for interoperability. Everyone that participates benefits

Are you thinking of a different Apple? We're all thinking of the one that does everything they can to lock their users into the Apple way of doing things and considers interoperability to be a four letter word.

  • I used to run Mumble for my Battlefield crew (probably Bad Company 2 I think) on a Nokia n810.

Your laptop will definitely handle it.

  • Removed by the conservative government because they needed revenue to pay for their tax cuts for millionaires.

  • You understand that they're not planning on cutting off people who already smoke, right?

You did actually read something and didn't just kneecirclejerk your response?

  • Don't spend iPhone money on an Android. Definitely don't on a Samsung unless you like having both Google and Samsung's versions of basic applications such as phone, messages, calendar, browser etc.

Motorola do a very minimally customised Android .

  • I'm not complaining about my experience, I'm saying I don't think Linux is ready to be a replacement for many Windows users.

You clearly agree because you say "spin up a live USB and do some testing".

  • Because there's no global list of what will and won't work so no way to know if Mint will be overall better or worse and I am completely disinterested in distrohopping.

  • Yeah I think that's probably the most common attitude amongst people comfortable with Linux but it's not helpful for the "just install Linux" movement.

  • Australians are largely unbothered by being mistaken for Kiwis. Not so much the other way so if in doubt ask if they're from New Zealand.

  • We recently elected a government led by a wannabe 1%er so worse than Australia but better than the US.

  • I haven't run Linux for probably 20 years until last week when I replaced my windows 10 with Tumbleweed. It's definitely better than I remember for driver compatibility but it's still not good enough for a general windows replacement.

Videos don't play without hiccups, sometimes my keyboard and mouse don't work when the PC wakes up and I needed to install Mint in distrobox to get some software working.

Also people have been trained to troubleshoot by clicking and Linux still mostly demands troubleshooting via the terminal and that's a deal breaker for many people.
