  • I think the ideal is that it would be a conscious decision to donate more to software that needs more work. It definitely wouldn't be good to encourage poor usability that creates more usage time. (That's how we ended up with terribly written recipes all over the internet that make you scroll for ages before you get to the useful information)

  • That's a real pet peeve of mine. I would have thought activist groups would be more inclined to avoid supporting the tech oligarchs and especially Meta with all the controversies they've had.

  • I've had to look it up and maybe fascism is the wrong word, I'm not exactly clear on the differences between that and totalitarian or authoritarian. But I've found examples to be Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot and North Korea. They've all had highly centralised power that inevitably gets abused. Or am I wrong?

  • Maybe bigotry is the wrong word in this case, but maybe not. Either way it's still discriminating based on an unchangeable characteristic of those people. I'd be equally annoyed if they targeted men or a specific race or an eye colour. I just think that when you try to help people, you should try to discriminate on circumstance, not things like race or gender. And we should be calling it out so people can do better in the future.

    I do know there is a lot of correlation between gender and circumstance, but I think it's either lazy to use gender as a proxy or they really are bigoted.

    On the other hand I would still like to give them props for helping people in a significant way.

  • I wish these kinds of services could target specific at risk groups, not a gender.

    I would be happy if it was focused on homeless parents with young children, or homeless victims of family violence. With those things they might still end up getting only women, but at least they'd be selected based on their situation instead of bigotry.

  • Just a couple months ago I was giving snacks to my kids by a river, with one of them on my lap. Then a lady started yelling across the river, saying I was suspicious and asking my son if I was really his dad... It changed a really nice moment into something horrible.

  • That's a good list, except I would have thought that number 4 is an important responsibility for teachers? Probably the most important thing kids need to learn is how to behave in an acceptable manner. We can't rely on all parents to be able to do that unless we start putting draconian restrictions on parenting. So, it has to be part of teachers jobs.

    Maybe there just needs to be better processes in place to handle problematic children, especially in high school.

  • I mean, you'll never really get the full story of anything if it requiers every adjacent detail, there's just too much detail in any event to document it all. So, I think it's more that being queer is an important part of this story because queer people have been marginalised. Which means it's important that they have good representation and their achievements are celebrated.

  • The breakers aren't on the actual outlets. We just have everything on breakers in the power box. So I think the Australian system is good, but it's not inherently because of the outlets. Other types have the same safety benefits.
