  • Protest ? Three states in the USA recently banned protesting.

If I'm thinking about the right laws, don't they more specifically make whoever is running the protest responsible for damages or crimes done by members of the protest if said members cannot be identified?

  • I actually had someone whose family member died of Covid tell me that his brother-in-law didn’t really die of Covid, he died of something else, because it’s all overblown and the hospitals are doing a similar scam to this myth (i.e. making it out as a bigger deal than it needs to be.)

That sort of thing goes around here a lot too, usually framed in terms of "He didn't die of COVID, but if you die from any cause whatsoever while you also have COVID they'll count it as dying of COVID to make the COVID numbers bigger." It usually falls apart when you ask why they want the COVID numbers to be bigger than they really are.

  • We always have been, it's just that the begging started out looking like math and has gradually gotten more abstract over time. We've just reached the point where we've explained to it in mathematical terms how to let us beg in natural language in certain narrow contexts.

  • Yeah, but it also meant he got to be on display in the gallery without the clout chasing and schmoozing normally required, and I'm sure they feel that has to be punished.

  • No the rhetoric is just different, more transparently objectifying; ‘protect the titties’ discourse. TERFs talk about them as ‘mutilated sisters’ or some shit, because its still about tge myystical divine feminine bullshit to them. You hear it more direct from patriarchy than from its proxies.

    1. Rarely about trans men, not never. The dialogue is mostly framed in terms of men being a predatory danger to women so taht women need spaces where men are kept away from them and men being such predatory monsters that they will pretend to be women in order to get access to their prey. This is more or less the standard TERF (and amusingly also the right-wing tradcon) perspective. They don't even really hide it.
    2. It feels like you're just jumbling things up here - if the core premise is that men are better than women and trans people disrupt the patriarchal hierarchy, why wouldn't the focus be mostly on trans men, framed in terms of them trying to steal patriarchal power for themselves rather than mostly focusing on trans women being framed as predatory "men in dresses" using gender identity claims to have easier access to their prey?

You’re reading a little transphobic and under informed on the topic here

Transphobic how? By not accepting your interpretation of transphobic arguments that requires ignoring the actual arguments made in favor of all transphobia just being that trans people represent a disruption of a patriarchal gender hierarchy? Because that doesn't really align to basically any transphobic arguments that transphobes actually make. It requires ignoring what transphobes actually say almost entirely.

When people tell you what they believe, it's usually better to believe them. They generally have the better view of both what they believe and why they justify those beliefs.

Oh yeah fuck you stop talking to me.

For what, drawing an explicit difference between sex and gender? Or am I supposed to pretend now that there is no difference - there is only gender?

  • I don’t remember if it’s the doctor’s office or the law.

Most of the time it's the individual doctors. For example, my wife had to shop around for a hysterectomy to find a doctor willing to do it, despite multiple medical conditions related to her reproductive system that would be resolved by it, and despite being told by several of the same doctors that she was probably never able to have children. Most of them refusing because she hadn't had any children, despite also claiming she couldn't in the first place.

  • Its that she hates women, or thinks women are inferior to men. You see this with all terfs.

No, she doesn't. You just operate from a (shockingly common) perspective in which any case where anything gender-related that doesn't conform to your particular flavor of progressive feminism must collapse into misogyny.

She literally just believes that men are evil monsters who will do whatever they have to to prey on innocent-by-default women. Including pretend to be women if needed to get to their prey. It's like the white supremacists who believe black folks are inherently criminal, violent monsters except with men instead of blacks.

So she invented some magical bullshit about why she was a full person.

She's never believed she wasn't, or needed to invent magical bullshit to believe she is, at least related to gender. She just needs to believe that men are evil monsters who will pretend to be women to attack "real" women, which is shockingly common.

But the magical bullshit is magic; doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Which trans people inherently bring/are.

Her problem isn't that she sees trans people as fuzzing up her hierarchy in which men are superior to her.

There's a reason why transphobic dialog is rarely about trans men (despite them also violating the same "magical bullshit"), and very often framed in terms of "men in dresses", and that's because it is most often about how men are monsters and women need to be protected from them, and trans women are forever tainted by the original sin of having been born male sexed.

  • Trump can't cash out shares for 6 months. So now they have to keep the price inflated for 6 months.

Could be some folks find value in social media for a group preselected for gullibility.

  • Nah, your lifetime license will be fine. They'll just slightly rename the products, release them as "entirely new, unrelated products" and cease updating it under the old name. You can still use the old, never updated product in perpetuity, if you want...

The first time this happened to me was a MUD client of all things. zMUD discontinued, check out the new cMUD! Also available with a lifetime license just like zMUD was!

  • There's a difference between training related constraints and hard filtering certain topics or ideas into the no-no bin and spitting out a prewritten paragraph of corpspeak if your request goes to the no-no bin.

One of the problems with the various jailbreaks concocted for various chat AIs is that they often rely on asking the chat bot to roleplay being a different, unrestricted chat bot which is often enough to get it to release the locks on many things but also ups the chance it hallucinates considerably.

  • How so? If CP and things adjacent to it (drawn stuff, "teen" porn, catholic schoolgirl outfits, etc) content is going to make people promote and encourage people to molest children, why wouldn't gay porn promote and encourage homosexuality?

Like this is one of those things that feels a lot like picking and choosing based on preference. I suspect violence in media being a historic right wing talking point is the only reason it's not on the bad list like sexy women and loli stuff.

  • Well one is done precautionary as it doesn’t have any big life altering side effects

I mean, reduced sensation, higher rates of some kinds of sexual difficulty later in life, and like anything that causes pain and stress to a neonate there are signs that it can have long term psychological effects.

  • In Germany, it's an anti-terrorist precaution. Criminals love anonymous prepaid SIMs.

Wouldn't they solve this by adding a level of indirection? Like offering to pay some schlub cash with a nice margin to buy several prepaids for them?

  • And they had nothing to hide either - and all of the ones they burned were perfectly innocent and legal... but even those can be taken out of context and used against you during a police investigation.

If you give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest of men, I will find something in them which will hang him.

  • My favorite so far was a factory that put a giant metal shipping container in the middle of the shop between the AP and where they were using the wifi and complained that they couldn't understand why that part of the shop got no signal.

  • Oh, they care about the laws, but (say it with me now) just because you can express it legally doesn't mean a private corporation is required to host it for you.

Somehow a very lot of people only seem to remember that when it's views they find upsetting. Usually right wing ones.

  • Specifically that you have gone out of your way to defend feminism and express disdain for anyone that isn't all on board with feminism or sees feminists as often being obstacles to dealing with men's issues and then use the CCMF shelter as your first example of the services available. CCMF (and their parent org CAFE) who have been criticized, challenged, etc at basically every step until fairly recently and that nearly exclusively by those doing so under the banner of feminism.

    https://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/controversial-mens-help-centre-opens-in-toronto-183022931.html https://globalnews.ca/news/1676642/controversial-centre-for-men-opens-in-toronto-amid-criticism/

Those are regarding their men's help center that predates the shelter.

There's a feminist blogger they quote in that second article with lines like: “I think they work really hard to discredit the feminist movement and to kind of take back a lot of the gains that women have made” and “They’re basically an anti-feminist organization and they’re kind of masquerading this as ‘oh well, it’s just for disenfranchised men’ when they kind of have an ulterior agenda.” Do those statements sound similar to things that have been said in this thread? Including I believe by you?

Going further back their parent organization CAFE got it's first taste of both trying to touch on men's issues and also being protested by feminists when they tried to do a series of talks on men's issues in 2012 at University of Toronto. Here's a video of the first such talk, so you can see the kind of thing they were protesting (warning: this is the entire talk so it's two and a half hours long): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6w1S8yrFz4

  • I think the trick here is you're using "men's shelter" to mean "homeless shelter that accepts men" (which Men's Shelter Hamilton is) while they are talking about shelters for abused men - there's a significant difference in what sort of services the two groups need. Same reason why no one argues that homeless shelters that accept women remove the need for domestic violence services for women, they aren't the same thing and don't need the same services. You can count the number of shelters for male victims of DV in North America on one hand with fingers left over, or at least you could last time I checked which was ~2020 (at the time it was two in the US and one in Canada, the CCMF shelter had just opened).

Your CCMF link isn't to find the nearest shelter to you (which would be helpful if there were several options), but to talk about and start the intake process for the CCMF shelter. That the page title is "Family Shelter Registration Form" and they talk about "the" shelter should be your first hints. Here's the poster for the facility: https://menandfamilies.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Poster-FamilyShelterCCMF.pdf

  • 8chan was where everyone went during gamergate because they thought Moot was a feminist/ anti freedom of speech.

...they thought this because Moot banned the topic from 4chan. Which...isn't a thing that happens often.
