It's a basic Vietnam war movie; as in all the sympathy is given to the drafted Americans, how those poor guys just were forced to partake in a genocide.
The first half also has that classic satiric dilemma, as in many people only remember the drill sergeant and do so fondly. The guy is so memed and I don't think it is ironic most of the time.
