For his part, Haftar — a U.S. citizen and an allegedly CIA-trained estranged Gaddafi ally supported by an alliance of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt as well as Russia — has made little secret of the modern French weaponry he has acquired despite a U.N. arms embargo.

    ...

Paris has been quietly involved at least since 2015 in building up the flashy uniformed baron of Benghazi as a strongman it hopes can impose order on the vast, thinly populated North African oil producer and crack down on the Islamist groups that have flourished in the ungoverned spaces of the failed state.

In doing so, it has trampled none too subtly on the economic and security interests of its EU neighbor Italy, the former colonial power in Libya and the main foreign player in its oil sector. Rome has endured an influx of hundreds of thousands of refugees and economic migrants across the central Mediterranean since a French-driven NATO air campaign toppled dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, leaving post-war chaos in his wake.

    ...

Critics of France say potential “winnings” in reconstruction contracts and increased business for oil major Total provide one motive for its Libya policy. Haftar, who controls eastern Libya from his stronghold outside Benghazi, grabbed key oilfields operated by Italy’s Eni in the south earlier this year before turning his guns on the capital.

    ...

After the instability unleashed by the Arab Spring uprisings, the dominant view in government circles in Paris is that strongman solutions are the only way to keep a lid on Islamist militancy and mass migration, and tant pis (tough luck) for human rights and democracy.

    https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/7/12/libya-asks-france-to-explain-how-its-arms-reached-haftar-forces

Libya’s United Nations-recognised government on Thursday demanded urgent answers after Paris conceded French missiles were found at a base used by renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar whose forces are fighting to take over the capital Tripoli.

    ...

France’s defence ministry, confirming a report in the New York Times, on Wednesday said the US-made Javelin missiles discovered in June at a camp south of Tripoli had been purchased by France.

But it denied supplying them to Haftar in breach of a UN arms embargo, saying French forces operating in the war-torn country had lost track of them after they were judged to be defective.

The anti-tank missiles, worth $170,000 (150,000 euros) each, were seized when forces loyal to the UN-recognised government in Tripoli overran the pro-Haftar base in Gharyan, 100km south of Tripoli.

Three of them were shown to journalists, including AFP reporters, on June 29 alongside Chinese-made shells bearing the markings of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The French ministry statement did not explain how the missiles were lost and the find is likely to boost suspicions that Paris is backing Haftar on the ground.

France was the only European country deemed to be a supporter of renegade general Khalifa Haftar, who launched a more than year-long offensive on Tripoli to oust the UN-backed government. The dispute with Ankara has escalated as Turkey's military intervention backing the Tripoli-based administration shifted the dynamics of the Libyan conflict, with Gen Haftar's forces suffering a string of defeats in recent weeks.

    ...

When Gen Haftar launched an offensive in south Libya at the beginning of last year that preceded his attack on the capital, France publicly supported him. The foreign backing was considered to have at very least emboldened him to launch his assault on Tripoli. Months later, US-made Javelin missiles, purchased by France, were discovered by Libyan government forces after they seized one of Gen Haftar’s camps.

    ...

Although Gen Haftar has had strong support from Russia, the UAE and Egypt — all of whom have been accused of violating the arms embargo on Libya — France has struggled to find support for its confrontational approach from its Nato and European allies. Other European states view the Libyan strongman as the aggressor and the main barrier to a political resolution.

Note that the UAE is also keeping the Civil war in Sudan going and aiding in massacres that could amount to genocidial acts in order to extract resources from Sudan. The UAE, Egypt and Saudi Arabia are key allies to Israel in West Asia and North Africa, which further intertwines them and Russia with France in destabilizing the region and supporting grave violations of human rights and international law.

  • How does this relate to Russia’s cooperation with Haftar trying to cause a migrant crisis in Europe?

It relates as France is willing to work alongside Russian interests in North Africa, if France believes it to serve their own interests. Now it backfires and that was predictable. It also raises questions about France reliability in fending off Russian threats to the EU.

More in general it raises question about the EUs conduct towards Haftar, Libya and North Africa in general, believing that war-lord slave-traders would be suitable "partners" for fending of refugees reaching EU countries.

  • Hafta is not just backed by Russia. He is also backed by the UAE and France, among others, seeking to undermine Lybian stability and the internationally recognized government.

  • Israel also murdered some of their own civilians as they were dragged back to Gaza, employing the "Hannibal doctrine" that previously was only used to murder their own soldiers to prevent them being taken POW.

  • The GDPR includes exceptions for governmental surveillance.

  • So, if you set a bios password either way, which benefit does secureboot give?

  • When Israel "assasinates" a "high value target" usually dozens if not hundreds of people are murdered alongside. Heck they have an AI tool to make sure that targets are hit when they are home with their family to maximize the casualties.

If you are Palestinian, Israel will probably try to kill or abduct and torture you. So people rather die fighting.

  • Anybody else who finds the color choice counterintuitive? At first i was wondering, why all the ships are on land.

  • Pretty sure that there is a lot of military and "pirate" ships around the world that also have their transponders turned off regularly.

  • They are already in the process. This is what Özdemir and other "realos" want. A party for people who would vote FDP or CDU but make sure their groceries are "bio" labeled and "compensate" the emissions of their holiday flights.

  • Well the Greens lost about a million supporters in the last election. This constant thinking in terms of tactics instead of proper positions, is one of the reasons why the "center" parties have been failing and then moving hard to the right, only further failing.

What decides how people vote for the most part, is what the public discourse is about. By parroting right and far right positions, the Greens and the SPD helped strengthen the Fascists. Instead what would have been needed is a "left" alternative as in supporting the constitutional and basic human rights of people, limiting the influence of money on politics and modernizing infrastructure based on proper tax income (wealth tax, inheritance tax without loopholes.) Instead the Greens went for "tough on crime and deport the brown people!"

  • Also the Greens in the West had much more social security and anti capitalist positions until the late 90s early 00s when the former students started making big money in the German industry.

  • Naja, die Eliten in Frankreich sind noch deutlich raffgieriger und korrupter als in Deutschland. Uns geht es relativ "noch zu gut".

  • Reuters found no evidence Siemens knew its equipment was sold to the Russian explosives maker.

Siemens exists since almost 180 years. It is an industrial company since more than a hundred years and historically has been active around the globe long before the "modern globalization" starting around the 80s. Siemens has been active in China since 1872.

I find it hard to believe, that no one involved with that sale had an idea of what is happening. Siemens knows all the tricks in the book and they know a lot of people in a lot of countries.

  • Possible catches based on past statements and decision. They don't have to materialize, but we need to be vigilant:

    • The German government might just be lying. They don't have to report on decisions which weapons or other military equipment are exported to whom until much later.
    • The German government might make distinctions between weapons and other military equipment and rebrand that equipment as for civilian purposes. i.e. spare parts for military vehicles, radio equipment, personal armor...
    • The German government might satisfy itself with a declaration by Israel, where the material would be used and then not ensuring it isn't used in Gaza. We saw the same last year in September when arms exports worth a hundred million Euro were authorized after Israel sign a waiver that they promise not to use them in war-crimes.
    • The German government might have coordinated with the US to ensure the gap is filled, or organized circumvention by selling through a third country.
    • The German government might have coordinated with Israel that this is only temporary and in return will use this as a fig leave to continue blocking economic and diplomatic efforts to pressure Israel.

The decision by the government is not binding like a law. There is no immediate repercussions for breaking it. The only repercussions are outcry by the people and media and down the line hopefully prosecution in The Hague.

  • You don't need many people to make it hell for the occupiers to occupy. The Sunni "insurgency" in US+allies occupied Iraq was estimated to have about 3,000-7,000 fighters. Meanwhile the US had up to 160,000 occupation soldiers staged in Iraq around 2005-2006 before slowly giving up against the resistance.

This is also why Israel aims on building concentration camps. It makes resistance much harder to organize than if people still have their own homes, have jobs and can meet without direct surveillance.

  • Veldkamp also rejected calls to halt arms imports from Israel, saying the Netherlands prioritised domestic and EU procurement before sourcing from third countries. However, he said the Netherlands had already taken "significant steps" including travel bans on two Israeli ministers, adding: "This war has ceased to be a just war and is now leading to the erosion of Israel's own security and identity."Outside the parliament building in The Hague, around 250 pro-Palestinian protesters demanded stronger Dutch action. Local media reported chants and banners calling for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid.

So it is not "just" but the Netherlands continue to support it, instead of opposing it. Well, Amsterdam - The Hague only is an hour by train.

  • I don't think they will take it fast. Many military and intelligence people in Israel have warned against it. The fighters in Gaza have been preparing many years for a new ground invasion. Throughout the past 2 years Israel often claimed to have conquered an area, only for the army to keep being hit in guerilla operations in those "conquered" areas.
