    This was pretty much the Margherita that my friend ordered in Italy and posted a picture on his FB, "This is what REAL Italian pizza looks like." (of course he's from the US but claims he's full blooded Italian, and always boasts about what is and isn't "real" Italian food)

    Anyway, the pizza was overcooked on one side, had almost no visible cheese, giant tomato slices and a couple pieces of basil.

    I know it's objectively better than greasy monstrosity American pizza, but imagine going all the way to Italy just to eat some bread with tomatoes on it and being convinced it's better than any other thing on the planet.

  • I love when people still treat pineapple on pizza as some shocking new development. I grew up in rural ass Ohio in the late 90s/early 2000s and the pizza places had pineapple as an option.

    I wish I liked pineapple (the texture doesn't do it for me) because I'd be ordering it a lot more just to see who gets offended.

  • I don't know if it's still the case, but smart TVs were a bit cheaper than "dumb" TVs at one point, since the cost of the TV was subsidised by all the streaming platforms that paid to be included on the TV manufacturer's OS, and have a customized Netflix or Amazon logo button on the remote that opens their app.

    I don't know if this is done anymore since there are hardly any dumb TVs out there being made now.

  • I admit, I took the bait for a while and subscribed to a few streaming platforms. A few bucks a month to not deal with the inherent risks of pirating, or headaches trying to find a bootleg stream that works? Why not?

    Then came the price increases. Shows abruptly moving to other streaming platforms with little to no warning. Ads with tiered services ("pay $10 more to see just two minutes of ads instead of five!").

    Suddenly pirating started to look good again.

    Middle Eastern cultures were deep frying dough as early as the 2000s BCE.

    But the US developed and spread modern industrialized deep frying techniques which I think is what OP was getting at.

  • Yeah unless it's cold enough to snow, I usually don't wear a jacket. Even when it's like 50°F/10°C and I'm out in public in just jeans and a t-shirt, I get so many borderline paternalistic comments from strangers: "You need to put on a jacket." "Where's your coat?" "You'll catch a cold wearing that shirt in this weather."

    (Also why the fuck do people, even younger people, still believe that myth? Colds are caused by bacteria/viruses, not from the lack of a jacket.)

  • I used to do that at the Burger King that was next to my old house. I'd prop my laptop up by the window the faced the restaurant and start downloading.

    Then at some point they added something to the WiFi that, after you've been connected for like 30 minutes, disconnects you. You wouldn't be banned or anything, it would just cut the connection until you go back to the captive portal and click "I Agree" again.

    I feel like a lot of public WiFis these days have data caps and throttling to circumvent downloading.
