Hexbear needs to fuck off with leaning this hard into whatever this is. Putin’s actions in Ukraine were and are bad. The site as a whole was outright shocked when he invaded in 2022, and now we’re here?
They’re being forced to prioritize busing kids going to charter schools on their dime while still stuck with the same resources they had before. So, you end up with new, overlapping routes and the public school kids are getting shafted.
Their numbers seem right? You’re talking about 30 seconds or whatever of compute time on some high end hardware. Also gotta keep in mind that when you’re searching the internet you’re getting a few milliseconds of time or whatever on some very serious distributed hardware.
The cost for training is immense but the cost for a basic query is something like a search. They are trying to build out far more of these shitty data centers in a fruitless pursuit of AGI using this shit though.
And these are the guys that claim they’re going to bring you AGI
It is legitimately useful to me but I’m a many hats tech zorbo who’s constantly hopping from one little project to the next. It’s not exactly their dream though in that it at best supplements my work instead of replacing it, and I’m not sure you could ever trust it to do the latter with all the hallucinations and whatnot.
As to the capitalists at large? I see it mostly like internet bubble 2.0. They’re throwing money at anyone with a pulse who happens to mention AI, and the vast majority of it is either too dumb to ever make sense or extremely premature. But, at the same time I can’t see the tech going away.
It’s been a big factor in Linux now having extremely strong support for windows games, as it runs Steam on Linux, uses PC hardware to play PC games, and it’s built/supported by Valve who did a lot of the heavy lifting on improving the existing Linux windows compatibility layer to where it is now. What that means for you is basically anything in Steam will run well in Linux even if it’s not a native Linux game (which most aren’t).
Otherwise, Proton’s the name of Valve/Steam’s compatibility layer project, and you can look up game-specific user reports on playability here: https://www.protondb.com/
All signs are that Israel went in alone here. We’re staging to enter and could end up entering, but that may have been a huge miscalculation on Israel’s part.
