  • It feels like even normal Americans don't quite get it. It's war. Picture Iraq, but you share a huge border. This continent will become a bloodbath. We'll make sure of that. We can only hope a nuclear deterrent can be deployed before that happens. To be clear, we see your country. We are ready to die, and kill, to not be part of it.

  • The joy of no longer being in Windows for gaming.

  • Good practice for the pilots though.

  • Looking at the boats on offer, only one currently fills the specification Canada is insisting on. The KSS-3 from ROK has 10 VLS in its block 2 configuration, the German Type 212 has 0 VLS. If Canada requires the capability to deploy ballistic missiles that leaves it with the Korean boat , that's also a very smart requirement since it allows for the nuclear deterrent that is obviously needed to be added down the line. The KSS-3 is currently deploying the Hyunmoo 4-4 ballistic missile, range of 800km, payload (I think) 1-2000kg. That could sling a thermonuclear warhead.

  • The cost of failing to deter aggression is incredibly high, look at Ukraine. We are in a similar situation, but we are even worse off. There is much less conventional parity between us and the hostile dictatorship next door. As an example, Ukraine started the war with a layered air defense network and thousands of interceptors to keep it in the fight, that led to Russian caution with their air assets and allowed a front to form. Canada has precisely 0 air defense batteries.

Ultimately there is no reasonable amount we can spend to gain conventional deterrent against the new United States. The money needs to yield a fast track to nuclear deterrence.

Unfortunately for us Canadians, we are staring at the choice between spending and sacrificing financially to hedge against the risk of invasion. If we don't, and the worst happens, we'll spend much, much more, and a lot of the cost will be blood.

  • Linux @lemmy.ml

I have an Nvidia GPU, can I game on Linux?

  • I use a Fedora variant called Nobara with my 4080. Driver management has been great.

  • I use Nobara, I've daily driven on my gaming setup for 8 months. Strong recommendation. It's maintained by GE of GE-Proton. I have an RTX 4080 and it has been completely smooth with drivers, my mic, camera, XBox controller, all working out of the box.

  • Personally running Nobara with my 4080, works great.

  • I personally use Nobara, I am happy with my setup. I primarily use my system for gaming and it runs great. I have always heard that having an Nvidia card is an issue, but it's been seamless for me, Nobara takes care of a lot of that stuff for you.

  • I love Yorkshire gold, easy to find over here in Canada.

  • The article seems to be about Bluesky responding to the finding that user data is being scraped because it is public. They are discussing how best to implement user control, and specifically which system is most widely recognised so that it actually reduces data scraping when you select that option. There's not much there that seems to indicate enshitification, unless it's that they are admitting no matter which protocol they use, some actors will always ignore it.

  • This is true, but currently that is also much needed for the Ukrainian forces as well. Time is needed to consolidate after the withdrawal from Kursk and to get more European integration up and running.

  • The F-35 deal pretty much has go too, we can't but our frontline equipment from an adversary. The modernization of the Rafale and the Gripen E both say they have an enhanced ability to engage 5th gen jets, both could be a good call for Canada.

  • America is the enemy. Smaller states need to work closely together to resist the wanker states like Russia, America, and China.

  • Also, the Nazi salutes from the podium during the ascension of a fascist leader might make them bolder too.

  • I have to say it's exactly the opposite. There's no realistic conventional deterrent we could deploy that would be more than a bump in the road. On the other hand, a couple KSS-3 subs off each coast with several nuclear tipped ballistic missiles puts tens of millions of lives and trillions of dollars of infrastructure on the table. It's about making invasion unthinkable, not desperately fighting an asymmetrical conventional battle we're doomed to lose.

  • I mean, yea, he's already threatening to annex my country so I would like to see more spending. Specifically on a sovereign nuclear deterrent.

  • Fact

  • I thought it meant you were classified as a battleship...
