Insufferable FOSS/Linux nerds are ruining Lemmy.

  • Steam only downloads at around 120Mbps on all of the distros I've tried, which are Ubuntu 23.10, Fedora 39, and Manjaro 23.0.4.

The distro sees my 2.5Gb NIC, and the web browser downloads at full speed, but Steam refuses.

I tried everything. Changing servers, installing DNSMASQ, different distros, etc. and nothing fixes it. DNSMASQ did bump up my speed to 300Mbps for a second, but then right back down to 120Mbps.

Upon Googling this, it's a known issue. A LOT of people have the issue. Some them say DNSMASQ fixes it, others say Valve fixed it years ago, and others, like me, say nothing fixes it, and we move back to Windows where we get 1900Mbps download on Steam.

Everyone who wants to fight me about this, calling me names, all say it's "an easy fix", but refuse to tell me until I tell them I am a stupid idiot and apologise for criticizing Linux.

    Here's my issue:

  • I've spent the past 2 days being called names because I am having an issue with download speeds in Linux, and I said Windows is better because in my experience it just works.

Someone literally told me to apologize for saying this, lmao. I'm called an idiot, moron, that I am the problem, all because Linux refuses to work, and the hardcore FOSS/Linux Lemmy community can't handle it.

This place is so tiring. Reddit users were toxic, but Lemmy users are even more so. I guess that's what happens when you get all the banned people, like you said, and a group of people who hate Reddit, in one place. Lemmy reminds me of VOAT. Instead of insane right-wing hate, it's just insane hate to anyone who dares pay money for something, or says something negative about FOSS/Linux.

  • Canada doesn't even give people on disability enough to afford rent, let alone groceries, power bills, car insurance, etc.

Maybe start there. Help the disabled survive.

  • and that's why I've said 3 times now that they over promise and under deliver everything. I don't think most people would've voted for the Sniffer if they told us it would have a whopping total of two plants..

  • People have been asking for the world to feel more full for over a decade. We don't care that Mo Creatures are "useless", they add charm and a danger to the world.

Right now there's nothing in the water that hurts you, unless you find yourself near a drown area. Meanwhile mo Creatures added sharks that actually added a reason to watch out, and a reason for the water to be dangerous. In real life the ocean is extremely dangerous, yet in Minecraft it's literally the safest place.

I'm not asking them to add 500 plants, but adding 2 is a slap in the face. An intern could whip up at least 10 new plants in an hour.

Why add something and promise how it's so cool because it's going to find ancient flowers, just to add TWO. Literally useless. Literally a waste of time going through all it to get two fucking flowers. You're better off just going to the meadow and grabbing flowers to decorate with.

They over promise and under deliver EVERYTHING.

  • I've started playing Vintage Story and you really realize how empty Minecraft is.

Minecraft is still extremely polished, even with the bugs, and for some reason literally no other game can touch how smooth Minecraft feels to play, but it's just so empty.

It's wild they never added mobs like the Mo Creatures mod did like a decade ago.

They then have mob votes, but then take months and months to implement 1 single mob, and then half ass it anyway. Every single mob they've added via mob vote feels extremely half baked. Like the sniffer having TWO plants? TWO???

And then when you beat Minecraft the credits are over an hour long. How can you have so many developers but somehow develop slower than when it was just Notch himself?

  • Neckbeards fighting about Linux. No girls in sight.

    Like Lemmy.

  • I weirdly don't find this creepy, and I don't know why. Perhaps it's because the terrain is difficult and it's very perfect timing, but not creepy?

Before I read it, I thought it was going to be some deserted island and a living person, who wasn't them, made it for them. Kinda like a "get off my island" type deal, but creepy because they didn't know a living person was nearby, which could've been bad.

But instead it's just lost people get lost close to a place where someone got lost previously, and it just so happens a helicopter flew by and saw the sign from the previous person.

  • Most average people are afraid of the command line, and really want a GUI for everything. Many of these people’s first exposure to Linux could scare them away depending on the distro they happened to choose, I think.

Or it's the fact the community is so toxic?

Every computer, doesn't matter brand or hardware, never works 100% out of the box on Linux. Doesn't matter which distro.

You ask online, and people scream at you to run terminal commands or go back to Windows.

You run a terminal command that breaks your system, and people blame you for running random terminal commands..

You go back to Windows, and people say "Linux is so friendly, you don't even have to touch the terminal anymore if you really don't want to!"

    Rinse and repeat.

  • Linux - I can't run that software.

Linux - I can't run that hardware, the drivers are for Windows/Mac only.

Linux mobile - I have the performance and depth of a diaper full of shit. (cough, cough²)

  • I don't buy any pis because they are $100+ in Canada.

Remember when it was supposed to be a cheap computer? Ya..

  • Honestly the worst part about Windows is the fact that sometimes it will restart to install updates through the night, closing everything you had opened. The preinstalled garbage is also annoying, but can be uninstalled easily.

Outside that, it honestly just works. It's great for old people.

My experience has been the same as yours. Trying to get WiFi, Audio, webcam, bluetooth, GPU, etc. working on a Linux distro is a nightmare. Then when you get it working somewhat, it'll just be randomly borked the next time you boot your system. Requiring another 5 hours and 600 tabs of research to figure out what you did to fix it the first time.

  • Ya, I am allowed to post my opinion. I don't think people who refuse a vaccine that can help save others should be allowed to receive a vaccine that benefits only them.

If you're upset, you're part of the problem. Not my fault. If you don't want to see my comments, which I am free to post, block me.

In fact, don't worry about it. I will block you, because your reply is insane. Literally complaining to me because I posted my opinion, and then calling me intellectually dishonest. Nutters.

  • Don’t DERAIL this conversation about a completely different vaccine.

I was replying to a question. Please follow the context thread, or go away.

  • You don't want to get a vaccine to help others + yourself, you shouldn't be allowed to "believe in science" when it benefits you and only you.

  • Unpopular opinion: Anyone who refused the COVID vaccine should be banned from getting this.

  • Wish it was. The Linux community shitting on Windows is worse.

  • I can spend hours doing work without any mandatory updates .

Weird way to say spend hours fixing something that just randomly borked your PC.

Seriously, though. Windows has a fuck ton of issues, but it seems like every distro I install I am eventually greeted with something just completely breaking for no reason whatsoever and spend the next 6 hours scouring Linux forums for a solution, where everyone is just hostile as fuck screaming at people to "figure it out yourself" and to "use Terminal".

Glad it works for you, though. Wonder how many downvotes this cold take is going to net me lol.

  • Once a company wouldn't stop emailing me despite unsubscribing. I sent them multiple emails with no response.

Then I heard that if enough people mark a sender as spam, Google starts automatically considering them spam for everyone. I emailed them to let them know this, and told them if they didn't remove me, I would mark them as spam which would affect them majorly.

They replied to my email within minutes and told me I was unsubscribed and would never receive another email from them lmao

  • Mildly Infuriating @lemmy.world

probably my biggest gripe with Lemmy right now. Feels like I'm just stuck in a loop.
