Yep, VPN will allow you to be on the same local network, and they’re only pay walling remote play.

She needs to update her app probably, it works fine for my wife on my server
Plex has pay walled FREE servers streaming to FREE clients only.
If you have a plex watch pass (for client) you’re good and can stream from any server. If you have a plex pass (for server) any one can stream from your server. But you have to have one or the other.
They’ve come out and said specifically this is a tech demo in the world of the Witcher 4 but its not actually witcher 4 the game. As in, they’re showing off the new tech, like foliage nanite.

I turn off any new features I don’t want, my friends and family can still stream from me for free since I have plex pass already, and it’s easy to share without having to pass around my IP address.
PhAzE@lemmy.cato Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Plex now want to SELL your personal dataEnglish83·25 days agoProbably because it works well, and has working clients on everything at this point. For some, a one-time fee was worth it when it was cheaper.
Sharing is also easier, as your friends just sign up to a plex account and you share your library with them. No need to send them an ip address and port, or fqdn that you have to maintain if your isp changes your ip address. It has its benefits, tbh, and the core sharing features still work for streaming. All the extra crap you can just turn off.
That why I think its still popular.

COD is pretty much just a huge confusing user interface with a bit of a game attached to it, released yearly. They for some reason force all assets for their online game to be installed if you install any cod game. It’s ridiculous.

Specifically, this bolded section:
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR CURRENT PLEX PASS HOLDERS:
For users who have an active Plex Pass subscription, remote playback will continue to be available to you without interruption from any Plex Media Server, after these changes go into effect. When running your own Plex Media Server as a subscriber, other users to whom you have granted access can also stream from the server (whether local or remote), without ANY additional charge—not even a mobile activation fee.
PhAzE@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•Netflix will show generative AI ads midway through streams in 2026English2·1 month agoYep. But it gets called enshitification, yet the platform still scrapes Metadata reliably, still streams to any client reliably, and is still easy to share with friends and family wothout having to manage ip addresses or ddns. To me, the ‘enshitifcation’ people are complaining about is literally not wanting to support devs for a product that does what you need, well.
PhAzE@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•Netflix will show generative AI ads midway through streams in 2026English41·1 month agoNot quite. Only if users want to stream from a server that doesn’t have a plex pass, in which case the user needs a plex watch pass.
If you (the server owner) have a plex pass, all users (even free accounts) can stream from you without a pass.
If you (the server owner) do not have a plex pass, then the users need a plex watch pass to stream from you.
Essentially, they’re making sure one side or the other has paid, but free to free is being stopped.
Local stream isn’t affected by this either, only remote streaming. As someone who has had plexpass for 12 plus years, it doesn’t affect me or my users.
PhAzE@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•Netflix will show generative AI ads midway through streams in 2026English13·1 month agoYes, because the core mechanics of their platform is media metadata management and streaming. As long as those work, and my users don’t have to pay anything (because I have a plex pass lifetime already), then it has no effect on me or my users.
All that extra stuff can just be turned off.
PhAzE@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•Netflix will show generative AI ads midway through streams in 2026English46·1 month agoEh, tbh it still does the core basics of streaming my content and Metadata management, so I don’t really care about enshitification of ‘extra’ features that I never use. It’s still the easiest way to share media

Just watch when the next election is vastly different than what the US is expecting. Two of the branches of government are being completely bypassed. Congress is doing nothing, and judicial is powerless to enforce.
I’m sitting here in another country watching the great tower fall and all the excuses given to do nothing are astounding.
