Science and research (and health, education, etc.) has always been one of the greatest advantages of socialism.
IIRC one of the unfortunate oversights of the USSR was that they didn't heavily invest in computer science and genetics research because of their early association with Nazi "science". Naturally the United States never had any moral qualms about that.
The problems that get left out of that story's narrative IIRC was that she was inside her apartment building's lobby. Like yes people should have responded (assuming they could actually hear her, most apartment lobbies aren't built with acoustics in mind) but that's way different from there actually being like 20 people in the street looking on as the Bystander Effect implies.
"Russia has nukes. Ukraine does not. The outcome was decided before it began."
Russia will stay in Ukraine as long as it is profitable to do so, and will leave when that is no longer the case or can get something big enough in response to convince them to leave. The US and EU can supply arms to Ukraine to make it less profitable but even so Russia has far more troops and resources than Ukraine. Unfortunately the US also hinged that support on Ukraine not negotiating for peace so they've been dug in extra deep in this and lost at least a generation of men now.
Perhaps not, but merely an arrest record lowers your chances for gainful employment, jail time doesn't help either. The more desperate or miserable you can make someone, the more you can increase their chances of turning to more serious crime as a way out.
