  • I do recall a time Chinese international students were game pieces in the propaganda war against their mother country, how these students escaped communist repression and are now breathing the sweet air of liberty. Suddenly, they're dangerous agitators parasitizing our academic institutions by "studying in critical fields" and having "connections to the CCP." It's as if sometime during the past decade, we began seeing China less as a punching bag and more as a threat.

  • "Maoists" are often westerners who have inherited decades of failure to achieve socialist revolutions in their own countries. They are free to spend too much time thinking about what socialism should be and could be in their heads rather than what socialism is. To many of us, socialism is simply the opposite of capitalism rather than its negation, therefore socialism must be the absence of the most hated features of capitalism in our experiences and opinions. China doesn't always live up to these expectations.

    If you've never actually lived under socialism, you have no frame of reference for understanding how it's different from capitalism. If you've never seen anything but capitalism, you don't know how to identify its absence. This, more than anything, is what ultras struggle with. I think that's something we can all relate to on some level, even if some have a better handle on it than others.

  • So my family was not quite as bad as yours (fewer cards, too)… that being said, you may be surprised how people bend and twist to accommodate those they’ve already decided they love. Once they forfeit those bigotries for you personally, they’ll mellow out in general. Don’t try to “educate” them, it never works. Stock advice, maybe, but homophobia/transphobia is kind of the same thing all the way down.

  • I imagine if millions of Pakistani civilians were corralled into a narrow enclave and cordoned off with no escape or outside help as a consequence of decades of successive ethnic cleansing campaigns and land thefts by white settlers and then indiscriminately bombed into oblivion by people who openly declared an intent to exterminate them, there would be more pro-Pakistan protests. And I imagine if Pakistan at any point fought back against the settlers by violent or non-violent means, we would have millions of anglo kkkrackers cheering that genocide on, saying they deserve it, saying you hate Indians if you think they should live, etc. Thankfully, Pakistan is a nuclear nation and can more effectively ward off that kind of criminal behavior, so there is no meaningful comparison.

  • Just know you're not alone in feeling this way. I don't have the luxury of living in a place where organizing, protesting, and fighting back are realistic options, and I do often wonder about the effectiveness of doing so even given the opportunity. I think of Aaron Bushnell's words almost every day, "If you ever wondered what you would have done during the Holocaust, you're doing it now." It makes me deeply ashamed. I would throw my body on the gears if I could, but I can't find the gears, and I can't throw my body on them. They're simply out of my reach.

    Lenin puts this best. The activities which effectively disrupt the machinery of slavery, genocide, and oppression have been outlawed and are being outlawed. This is doubly so in the imperial core. I think BDS is an appealing option for so many first-worlders because it is something we can do that is extremely difficult to criminalize.

    Take solace that the work which brings imperialism to its knees is not ours to do. It is the work of the oppressed peoples of the world, and they are the only ones who can succeed in this endeavor. It will happen with or without our support. And it will happen. Let Hamas fire the shots, let Ansar Allah enforce its blockade, and let South Africa take these criminals to court. Palestinians need decent human beings to stand up for them in the imperial core.

    Whatever you do, don't despair. It sounds extremely stupid, but hope for a better world and a steadfast belief in justice which transcends courts and cops are potent weapons against soul-crushing barbarism. Keep speaking truth to power, comrade. It is all we can do.
