  • That link linked to /modcoord at perhaps dozens of moderators promised to leave, which is far more impactful than users. I know just from watching kbin, lemmy and other sites grow from this summer on that hundreds to thousands likely left reddit. Unfortunately it's probably a drop in the bucket but Web 2.0 was always probably going to win. The only real way I can see of us getting out of that en masse if when each site inevitably kills themselves through mismanagement.

  • I actually used to rely on that, using site:reddit.com for most searches. Reddit had some of the best in-depth discussion and tech advice I could find. Compared to the multitudes of blogs, YT videos, and decades-old forum posts that normally came up, reddit usually provided useful info. And it's pretty much the only reason I'm ever on the site now: the only results for some searches are on reddit.

Eventually if the quality of the posts decline, their SEO presence probably will as well. But google has been absolute dogshit for about a year now so who knows what that field will look like in another year. =/

  • Ever since earlier this year I've had WAY more friends, family and news articles I've seen mention or link to reddit than the past. I don't know if it's confirmation bias since I left reddit or if it just gained popularity at the same time or what. But I used reddit for 12 years and few other people in my circle used it heavily. Now it seems like it exploded?

  • Quote marks to search for a specific phrase in order doesn't work either. I remember in high school in the very early aughts being taught these operators. Fucking shameful.

  • It'll be far too late to save global society by then.

  • (novice) Why would you get UDP packets multiple times? UDP doesn't check for acceptance I thought.

  • Your rearview mirror likely has a little tab on the bottom of it. Push it when there's The Entire Sun behind you. It'll dim the mirror's reflection without changing the angle.

If you have a newer, fancier car, you might have a digital version of that.

  • uBO team (2 people) should not be responding to questions on reddit or elsewhere. They should just update the filters and post a "extension updated, should work again now".

In the end, Youtube will win if they want to win. Google can throw unconscionable amounts of money at their techs to fight the adblockers while the volunteers spend their attention and patience.

  • Leading financial figures on Wall Street made a show of saying they would not employ Harvard students who signed the statement blaming Israel for the Hamas attack. A billboard truck drove around Harvard campus displaying the pictures and names of the students, and their addresses and other details were published on websites.

That's some intense and coordinated propaganda.

  • Yep. It's all about helping people transition. So much of American food culture is centered around burgers, steak, BBQ, etc. It's really hard to just drop all of that on a dime, even if you want to. These products help people with that mental itch.

  • Hyperloop was invented to try to kill light rail. It succeeded at killing Maryland's new venture and Illinois'. Neither were built because Hyperloop promised bullshit. Elon hates public transport.

  • That doesn't mean everyone living on stolen land gets a pass just because they weren't the ones to steal it. They have an obligation to make it right.

  • There's nothing the average person can do to significantly curb their CO2 emissions. We still have to use electricity, drive cars to get to work and errands, and buy food grown with fossil fuels. The best the average person can do is to NOT have any children. The second best is to stop eating all meat, or at least greatly curb eating meat, especially beef.

I've already done both of those due to personal preferences but I doubt most people are willing.

Paper straws and reusable bags are nice but they ain't doing shit. Most Americans can't choose public transport most of the time. There really aren't major things we can do besides push for politicians to regulate emitters more/

  • ITT: men who can't ever admit they might be the problem. So many excuses here it's pathetic.

edit: I love the "not all men" and "not me". As always, it's not all men. But it's enough. And the men here getting so defensive really prove the point. And before anyone gets into it, it's not really the sex or gender. It's the societal expectations and allowances that encourage men to engage in abusive shit like we see in the article here. I.e. the patriarchy and those who support it.

  • Neither the USSR nor the CCP ever tried to be communist. They used that banner to gather supporters and then seized all control of the government in an authoritarian takeover. Communism doesn't have "dear leaders" or usually even parties. Places like the USSR used their control over capital and wages and property ownership to control their populace entirely. We've never really seen an actual communist country because all the major efforts were sabotaged by people who wanted to be dictators.

  • Aaaand there we are. 100% of these posts whining about being down voted and censored come from fascist havens or are bigots. Lol PCM. No fucking wonder.

It's because if you have that kind of mind, your "normal" comments might not be as tame as you think.

  • I wish hoopla had more ebooks. It seems to be more focused on comics, which is great for comics.

  • Taunting the general public. Always a winning move.

  • Is this anything that a simple admin password reset wouldn't fix? It's not like admins can see your passwords anyways. (if the system is even remotely competent)
