  • You offered two loaded options that "seemed apparent" to you, without acknowledging (and/or understanding) anything I actually said. You read whatever you wanted to hear apparently, and then re-addressed me with even more volatility. You tried to leave me with the options of "agree with me" or "disagree and be wrong"... cornering the conversation as opposed to actually intending to understand

    What would you like to hear so that you feel vindicated and whole? How far down the rabbit hole do we need to go before understanding this entire conversation is now meaninglessly entangled; we're apparently just misunderstanding each other

    "Go team". People are inherently geared towards black/white, group thinking, us and them; we're social creatures. I considered OP's meme to be unfortunately divisive, regardless of "how true" it is. Underlying truth underlies overlying generalizations, and really takes away from the interpersonal place we all share. Division is a cheap way to find acceptance amongst the group you wish to receive acceptance from

    If you're actually interested in continuing, I have the time unfortunately. If you're just trolling, no matter; something may be gained from our conversation by someone else. So where does or misunderstanding lie?

    "Go team" means people tend to create sides to choose from, out of some kind of nature or comfortability... but it can become unnecessarily divisive when the "sides" are arbitrary and narrow to begin with. But that's a lot to say when sometimes less is more, and I'm just commenting about a meme. I'm sorry if that upset you or you took it differently than intended... whatever you read wasn't what I meant, it seems. And I feel like you already know that, but fuck it, I'ma give you the benefit of the doubt

  • I see what you're saying, I guess it comes off as "all Germans" to me because "a random German" sounds like, "any random sample of Germans is likely to contain a xenophobic/nationalist individual"; when I feel like that could be the case for almost any random group... thus, unnecessarily creating an outgroup

    Maybe instead of "random German person on Lemmy", it could be "random xenophobic German person on Lemmy"...a little wordy, but it captures the irony of your statement, while also bringing the atrocities of Isreal to the forefront of attention

    Edit: maybe it's like mentioning "school shootings and guns" or "pittbulls" and inevitably awakening the indignant who just "have to comment and prove their point"... thus proving (and reinforcing) your own point. To me, it feels like introducing discussion on an already lopsided court; though I still respect your self-expression. I just feel it could be a little more nuanced so as to avoid any extra division... but that's just my own two cents

  • I appreciate the explanation. It still seems unnecessarily divisive though. If one had no context at all, this meme would just come off as "all Germans bad" or "all Germans are (insert one's perception)". Internalization of reactionary media isn't rational, and this just seems to throw fuel on a fire that doesn't even exist

    People are just people at the end of the day, and some are less informed or more hateful than others, wherever you go. No need to create an outgroup in order to condemn something inherently evil

Is there a specific user you're referring to, or are you casting a wide net and making "Germans" an outgroup? Maybe I don't get it, but it looks like you're condemning one thing at the expense of another... and that's unnecessarily divisive to me if your only goal was to bring something into the foreground of conversation.
