  • Even mild solutions get shouted down. In Canada we have a carbon tax that mostly ends up getting returned to Canadians in the form of a rebate. Reportedly 80% of Canadians receive more from the rebate than they spend on the tax.

The conservative party have managed to politicize the tax and seem poised to win the next election, with "scrap the tax" being a big part of their platform. We have a province literally going rogue and refusing to pay the tax, causing our tax agency to garnish them essentially.

Shit is fucking wild. All over a marginal tax that benefits poor people and punishes the heaviest polluters. People are so fucking stupid and selfish it drives me fucking nuts.

  • Or just fund public transportation instead :)

  • Public transportation, walkability, cycling infrastructure, and public spaces. Why are you so convinced I'm foaming at the mouth hating on america. I'm just a dude who thinks our cities suck.

  • It's weird that having a differing opinion of what makes a city world class means I'm "mindlessly shitting on america".

  • It's just my opinion. A world class city imo should have excellent public transportation, cycling infrastructure, parks and public gathering spaces, and traffic calmed commercial districs. Basically a world class city should have a lot of things worth visiting and infrastructure that lets you visit those places easily and comfortably without relying on a car.

No north american city meets those standards in the way that some european cities do.

  • Budget ebikes are around $2000 CAD. And I guess it depends on your area but a good lock that can only be defeated by a handsaw is $200, tracking devices are also an option.

Also you might be able to get a car cheaper than $6.5k but what kind of maintenance cost is that going to have? Not to mention gas, insurance, and parking.

  • Then why did you make it so beautiful in the first place

Imagine thinking the only reason your city should be a beautiful place to be is so that tourists can enjoy it.

  • I feel like you're missing the point. It's a protest, and they found an effective way to make their point. These tourists had their day ruined at worst, they'll get over it.

  • It's a protest. Same thing as climate protestors blocking the roads, no the individual commuters are not responsible for climate change, but the blocking roads is an effective way to draw attention to the issue.

Protests need to be disruptive or they won't be effective. These tourists had their day/lunch ruined at worst, the protestors are fighting for affordable living in the city they live in and they clearly have found an effective way to protest.

So yeah no, I feel bad for the tourists but that's about it.

  • Yup. Sucks to be those tourists for sure but it's not like they were in danger.

  • Not OP, not agreeing/disagreeing with them.

Self-driving cars should absolutely be held to a higher standard than humans. They are not humans and cannot be held accountable for their actions, therefore the benefits of their use over human drivers should be overwhelming before we allow them in the streets.

As for the trolley-esque problem being discussed, it's actually an incredibly complicated problem with even more complicated solutions. A statement like, "hit a wall instead of a person", seems obvious to a human but just adds a million complications to the situation. How do you detect if it's a safe wall to hit? What if it's a fence on a schoolyard with 30 children sitting on the other side.

  • heheheh

European cities also waste less money maintaining sparsely populated suburbs.

  • Honestly, as a Canadian I don't think north america has any world class cities.

  • hehe. You're implying gay people aren't regular people.

  • Mister, this is a Wendys.

  • I swear just last year I was hearing about how Europeans didn't like ebikes, glad to hear I was wrong.

The convenience of an ebike is honestly unbelievable. Steep hills become minor inconveniences and longer trips lose their sting. I live in a fairly bikable city and I really hope ebikes have some sort of explosion in the next few years. They are already pretty common but I think a lot of people would ditch public transportation/driving if they realized how convenient and fun ebikes are, especially in the summer months.

  • This is the most tech bro thing ever.

"Lets innovate ourselves out of a problem that innovation created"

Imagine trying to invent a new class tech instead of just putting your phone down.

  • We're on the path to electing a pro-rich, anti-trans, anti-carbon tax conservative :/

  • Watch Dan Olsen's video on flat earthers. I'm having a hard time remembering details but the conspiracy theories are more of a symptom than anything. These people are looking for a community as well as an explanation for why the world is so fucked up, and why they are miserable. Anti-semitism and conspiracy theories are more satisfying than anything the left can provide.
