  • Docker have many benefits - container meaning it can be more secure, easy to update and something that many overlook - a dockerfile with detailed intrusions on how to install that actually works if the container works - useful when wiki is not updated.

    Another benefit is that the application owner can change infrastructure used without the user actually need to care. Example - Pihole v5 is backend dns + lighthttp for web + php in one single container. In version v6(beta) they have removed lighthttp and php and built in functionality into the core service. In my tests it went from 100 MB ram usage to 20 MB. They also changed the base from debian to alpine and the image size shrink a lot.

    Next benefit - I am moving from x86 to arm for my home server. Docker itself will figure out what is the right architecture and pull that image.

    Sure - Ansible exist as one attempt to combat the problem of installation instructions but is not as popular and thus the community is smaller. They may leave you in a bad state(it is not like containers were you can delete and start over fresh easily) Then we have VM:s - but IMO they waste to many resources.

  • I use Inoreader. Not selfhosted but that is everything i have at that company. The articles are public anyway so I don't care that much.

    My workflow is article maximize and try to hide everything else like menubar and list of sources etc. I use jk to navigate for scrolling and v/space to go to article. I use vimium extension so d for close tab with article. Article is automatically marked as read as I scroll. It takes 5 min per day to go through. I think if I would selfhost then I would try tiny rss.

    I don't use it on phone. No need. I am at my computer most of the time.

  • Yes, trail period of MS Office. But when it runs out then they have to choose what to do. Buy or pick anything else? I think the problem here is that they know they will get full compatibility with others if they buy MS Office. MS Office does not even follow their own protocol standard. Some know that the webbased version is free. That makes it really hard to compete. I hope EU fix this.

  • I would make it controlled by voice. Just need to figure out a way to tell the user what the system can do. Computer, help me shop for medicin and hold up a box infront of the screen with what you use today. This should be simple. If you make it to complex like it is today then elder people will not use the computer.

    Basically a personal assistent/guide driven OS. Start with rethink the experience you would have if you went to the mall and have a human assistent with a big screen to show you everything.

  • Linux is ready for the webbrowser. Office? No, MS Office does not run and still the marketshare for MS Office is very high on Windows. It does not run on Linux. If the alternatives were better then people would use them. Gaming? Maybe for Steam OS but that is only one distro. If you choose something else you will not have such smooth experience. The user might be better off by moving to console. Any business tool like Adobe or custom built Windows tools does not work. This is very hard to change. Hence many can't even move to mac os due to this. Media Player/View Pictures? Yes, Linux is ready here.

    Can you choose to have Linux pre installed on a new laptop? No, not normally.

    There is still some work to do. I hope we get there. We are close for home users.

    Personally I use Fedora with Firefox.

    Linux may be ready to receive some of the users. Not in all areas. There is still work to be done. Unfortunately the users want to change now so it may be to other OS. Maybe MAC or Chrome OS. Unfortunately there is no easy transition or as camping for moving to Linux, like double click this .exe and migration begins.

    I moved to Fedora with KDE but that was only possible due to I am a power user. Average Joe will fail and find suitable replacement applications takes time.

    I hope some companies with money takes the opportunity to take care of those lost souls. Maybe Red har have money for TV ads?

  • I doubt that as the agent need to work first. Which it does not. And it will not solve the gui part. I do not accept running one extra VM as solution. Better is to look for alternative backup solution.

  • Veeam endpoint backup. The GUI does not exist and the cli version does not work with Fedora 41 and btrfs. I think it is the file system that is not supported. However, I use timeshift but it is not sending it remotely.

  • I think the question should be why choose eOS over normal Android. Because it is not fully Google made. Competition is good. Yes, I don't know how to switch Android ROM, so does many other as well.

  • I love when things are in ram. Can have whole vm disks. I also like creating new VMs in ram disks like /dev/shm it makes less wear on my ssd.

  • Kde because i want customization and standard is also ok. I tried gnome but did not like that extensions were required for tray icons etc. Gnome is otherwise good.

    I3 and hyperland i dont get. Some windows should not be very large no matter how much free screen space you have. Example is calculator or old school chat applications like pidgin. No native standard set of applications. Everything must manually be added and custom, like everything in kde settings(sound output, network settings, screen size etc). Waiting for when applications can recommend its screen size to the window manager.
