Am I the only one who finds it really weird when people refer to themselves as mom or dad of their pets? Yikes

German seems extremely hard
I always wonder where that sentiment comes from. Sure, the Grammar is a bit more complex than in English, but afaik it’s still considerably simpler than say Polish.
Plus, they’re fairly closely related, given that they’re both Germanic languages. The writing system is the same, German spelling actually makes sense most of the time, etc. Sure, English imported lots of vocabulary from Romanic languages that German does not have, but learning vocabulary is imho one of the easier aspect of language learning.
Consequently, the FSI classifies German as a category II language, ranging from I (including i.e. Dutch) to IV (which contains Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic), I being the easiest and IV the hardest.
The Chinese writing system alone is enough to discourage people from learning the language up to a fluent level…

Ooh nice, thanks :)
I recognized 打 as something on the lines of hitting or striking, but wasn’t sure if it actually had that meaning here, or something (seemingly) unrelated as in 打的.
I don’t know all the words in this, but I doubt it; it’s a classic Chinese tongue twister.
The first line translates to "four is four, ten is ten, fourteen is fourteen, forty is forty. On the second & third line it’s something along the lines of “whoever says 40/14 says <X>, <sth> 40/14”, as far as I can tell.
Spoiler
No, I don’t want to use a translator, where’s the fun in that?
Only the first season
FIFY
Although I actually found the movie quite tolerable.

Gotta say, using 3 just feels like giving up due to laziness, even in 1200BC.
Also it’s interesting how the Chinese entries basically stop between 1400 and 1949, whereas European names are far more present during this era. Some Japanese ones, too. I wonder how comprehensive this page is.
And yet, translators are losing their jobs left and right, from what I hear. Sure, quality has gone down, but most people don’t seem to care. Plus, in a lot of cases, instead of the AI doing all the work, translators proof-read AI generated texts and correct the worst mistakes. Fewer translators can translate more at a lower price this way.
Does the quality still go down a bit that way? Probably. But again, who cares? Not the people spending money on translations, that’s for sure.

It is indeed, yes.
Pizzacakecomics is on the frontpage of reddit exactly because it’s heavy-handed and only mildly funny.
Okay, fair. I just wish I could escape them – which is rather hard if the people voting stuff to my Lemmy frontpage have just as poor taste as the average redditor.
Youre right, but that doesn’t make this comic – or the others made by the same creator – any better.
it’s pretty absurd that anyone would deny it.
True, but then again it’s exactly what you’d expect from them these days. And even if it wasn’t – this comic is so darn plump I have a hard time seeing it as satire.
Plus, the creator drawing both caracters as ugly braindead idiots makes up half the ‘joke’ here. If ones satirical abilities are so non-existant they need to degrade the physical appearance of their opponents (however vile their views and actions may be) in their works, maybe it’s just time to give up and do something they don’t completely fail at.
Mikrochip@feddit.orgto Comic Strips@lemmy.world•Let's not jump to conclusionsEnglish4619·8 months agoStill not a fan of pizzacakecomics. The ones that are supposed to be funny aren’t, imho, and the political ones are way too heavy-handed for my taste.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, I agree with the content, but for a comic that’s on the reddit frontpage all the time it’s an incredibly crude way of getting the point across.
I tried that already, didn’t really help. That repo is currently deactivated on my machine, I think I had some (more) annoying problem with it (don’t remember all the details), but after spending quite a few hours on this problem, I essentially gave up trying to fix it. Right now, video playback works well enough that I don’t want to deal with it anymore.
And, honestly, I haven’t had a Linux installation where everything related to multimedia and graphics drivers just worked flawlessly. Ubuntu, Debian, Arch and Suse all had different issues. Switching from Nvidia to AMD didn’t help, either. Sometimes the flaws were minor and easy to ignore, but it has never ever worked as well as it does on Windows.
Not gonna lie, I’m glad I’ve moved from Arch to Tumbleweed. Media codecs are handled worse somehow, but I haven’t had to deal with crap like this ever since…
Honestly, that doesn’t make it much better. I always viewed the cats my family used to have as family members, but they were anything but children.
The way @captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works put it captures it quite nicely. They rely on their owners for certain things, but they are not children and their personalities do not match that.
Referring to them a such gives me the ick because a) it infantilizes beings which, well, simply aren’t children, b) at the same time humanizes them too much. And, paradoxically, c) makes me think of the kind of people who carry dogs around in their handbags and essentially treat them more like plushies rather than actual living beings. Just doesn’t sit right with me.
