  • It wasn't a weapon.

They aren't paid to find rotting fish.

  • Would you prefer they go back to mandating that you use Internet explorer?

Progress is slow little steps forward, with a step back here and there.

Chrome was better that ie. It was also available for use on all of the big operating systems.

The fewer Internet browsers a page has to support the faster it is to build and the more people will have a uniform experience there.

  • Is an algorithm not a formula?

  • Is it really any different than when the formula did it?

When Apple launched their credit card it was super biased against applicants with female names. They blamed it on the formula.

Ai is just the newest fancy word for programming.

  • Air drying gives me crisp clothes. Using a dryer with fabric softener gives me nice and soft clothes.

I want soft clothing. So I use the dryer.

  • Amazon was never able to honor the next day or even two day shipping

I used to travel a lot for work and needed deliveries on specific days. Amazon guaranteed delivery days were crap.

I know a guy who actually got an official response from Amazon about that. Their response was "We guarantee 2 day shipping once the items are shipped. We may not start shipping for a day or two depending on how busy we are."

  • The fact they're still running on dos is a clue that either they can't figure out how to upgrade or they don't want to upgrade or they simply won't allocate the budget to upgrade.

It generally boils down to money. Shops like that are toxic. They somehow don't have the budget to keep their business afloat, means you're not getting a raise.

If you take this job, you're obsolete. Getting the next job will be tough. You're interview at the next potential role what did you do at your current role? I ran dos on 30 year old machines. Interviewer: I'm sorry, but we need someone with experience in Windows ME.

  • No Stupid Questions @lemmy.world

    Why does everyone hate Cloudflare?

  • Delta is primarily an Airbus fleet. They do not currently fly any 737 MAX planes, though they have ordered 100 Max 10s for delivery starting in 2025.

I'll assume they're being pressured into it by the significant fuel savings the max offers over their current fleet.

Or, if are willing to fly any of the big 3's regional brands it'll be on a regional jet which Boeing doesn't make. Generally those are made by Bombardier or less commonly Embraer. Though, bigger plane means smoother flight.

  • The article talked a lot about school buses in rural areas. Mass Transit isn't a thing in most rural areas.

In urban cities, yes that's a feasible idea. Most people in the USA live in places where mass transit isn't feasible.

We are a nation of car drivers who bought into the dream of having a house on a large lot in the suburbs. Mass Transit exists, but in the burb it's generally a parking lot where you take a bus to your job downtown.

  • I'm literally not buying a Tesla because he's a douchbag.

When I see a Tesla on the road I assume they are a Musk fan boy. There's no prestige in that brand. There are a lot of us that assume that.

  • Most of those 100k kids waiting to be adopted are older kids. A lot of people want to start with an infant. Not everyone is equipped to adopt a teenager who has been in foster care for years. Then there are people who want bio kids.

  • So now you can get 5.1G or 4.9G?

  • You know, they'll ship stuff to your house for free as long as each order is over $35 (or maybe it's $50?). It's just that you have to plan ahead a bit more because it's no longer the "guaranteed" 2 day shipping.

I quit prime because that guaranteed delivery date was frequently not the actual delivery date.

  • I'm more worried about it going into another skyscraper.

  • A decade ago, my pilot friend informed me that after 4 years of college, starting pay was $18,000 a year. After a year of experience suddenly you're making 4 times that. Not a lot of people can afford to make that measley income for a year. It's not a sustainable way to recruit talent.

Then there's the issue is being on call when you're the lowest seniority in you're position where they can call you anytime a pilot calls in sick and you have to be at the airport in 30 minutes.

You can make a lot of money, but there's a lot of bullshit to deal with at the start of your career.

Wayfair CEO sends a harsh wake-up call to employees

  • In a previous life, I did loss prevention. The average shrink rate in retail in the USA is 2%. That means 2% of the merchandise leaves the store without being paid for.

An average Walmart does millions in sales each day. Conservatively 2% of one million is $20,000.

Thousands of dollars of unpaid merchandise leaves a big retailer every single day. It's part of the cost of doing business. That's also why online retailers are cheaper. They don't have to deal with external theft. They still have internal theft.

Shrink is the industry term. It's merchandise that isn't paid for and isn't there when inventory happens. Theft is most of it, both by customers (external) and employees (internal). It's also things that aren't rang up right at the register, damaged merchandise that isn't removed from the system correctly. It's a big umbrella term.

  • You're in a Walmart.

They claim to be cheaper so they can have that drabby distopian look.

In the good parts of town, they look nicer. In the poor parts of town they're legit worse than that.

Fwiw, I'll pay the extra dollar per shopping cart for the superior look of a target. Target is generally cleaner and crisper looking. As always there are exceptions to that rule.

  • Do you all think it'll come before or after he explains his Obamacare alternative?

  • My search results keep wanting me to go to Reddit. I'm trying to avoid it, but it keeps calling.

I'm not scrolling there like I did before the "Spez killed the 3rd party app migration". I miss the level of engagement and ease of finding communities. Lemmy is decent, but the post volume is lacking. If I scroll new now, and again 12 hours later, there's not much new stuff before I see the stuff from last time.
