  • Have you ever been to PowerShell Summit? It's the only nerd conference I've ever attended where only about half the attendees actually realized they are nerds at a nerd conference. I love the vibe. It's got style and pizzazz.

That said, the added entry for PowerShell would still be: "You are a nerd."

  • Well shit. It's got me dead to rights on a couple of these.

  • Dear server admins, please defederate threads.net. Dear users, ask your server admin to defederate threads.net.

  • Let's not defederate from every corporate player. Some of them can probably respect reasonable rules of civility.

But fuck Meta. We already know how this plays out.

We know there's a huge wave of hatred and misinformation incoming. We've seen it on their other platforms.

  • Yeah. I'll switch to an instance that is defederated from Threads, if mine doesn't.

I left Meta's other properties to avoid state sponsored hate speech. I won't use a platform that gives hate speech a platform.

I don't need to wait to know if Meta will do that. I already know.

  • It's the year of the Linux desktop! /s

But seriously, I think I'm going to buy a SteamDeck.

  • I've enjoyed the whole series, and this piece is particularly cool.

  • I predict that, within the year, AI will be doing 100% of the development work that isn't total and utter bullshit pain-in-the-ass complexity, layered on obfuscations, composed of needlessly complex bullshit.

That's right, within a year, AI will be doing .001% of programming tasks.

  • Based on my experience with venture capital, I'm not convinced venture capital has ever produced anything worthwhile.

  • You beat me to it. Everyone knows you get Vin Diesel if you accidentally bleach The Rock. The wax museum artists should have known better.

  • "Then you are truly lost."

  • Alright, I'm gonna ask: This is a joke cable right?

Every time I see something I'm absolutely sure is a joke cable, somebody links me to a piece of real hardware that actually needs that monstrosity of a cable.

But this time, I am 99% sure... Nothing actually could possibly have any use for this cable....right?

I would be more sure if one end wasn't a network cable end. Networking people have some deeply weird cables...

  • That's right.

But only because "Vim vs Emacs" is a technically a religious holy war.

  • It must have been traumatic for that Arch user to discover such rebellion in their child. /s

On a more serious note, if my kids find this post: I hope you know we can talk about closed source software if you're curious about it - and about maintaining a proper virtual infrastructure to protect the rest of the network from it.

  • In this thread, a lot of folks who would use their one wish to make the language better.

But I would change "their" to be spelled "the're" and pronounced "all'y'all's".

I hope I do grow up to be more like the rest of you, and make better choices, in the future.

  • There's no such thing as self documenting code, unless every method and variable name has the word "because" in it.

Anyone can read what the code does. The comments are there to answer why it does what it does the way it does.

Why is invariably lost to time, if it's not committed to a comment here and there.

  • Programming with AI help is like having the expert chef at my shoulder, giving me tips, but he's high as hell on three different mild altering drugs.

Then he's like "That cake needs some lemon juice. Trust me."

  • For being a sick burn, that was ice cold. I love it.

  • Yeah, this can be a generational cultural difference.

I mourned the death of my grandfather three separate times when my mother texted me "please call". Each time when I called back I learned something different:

    1. We had to change our lunch plans.
    2. There was an alarming local news article about driving conditions.
    3. My grandfather had died.
  • Markdown is gaining traction. There's lots of tools that will edit and display Markdown consistently, and without a dedicated tool, it's just a very readable text file.

And, most importantly for today, it's easy to generate a PDF file from, haha.
