  • Downloading large files from Usenet was paid pretty early on. If the core functionality of Usenet is now paid, this is news to me.

  • For your second point, its not at all uncommon for previously-legit sites to go malicious. Age alone means nothing, nor does reputation after a few years.

  • Oh, I'm fully aware. It just boggles the mind how the same tired outlook has endured for decades now.

  • If I wanted to READ ai "snark", I would spend more time on facebook, or go back to reddit. How hard could it be to slap a battery and 4G/5G modem on a google home or alexa? Eiter of which would be easier to run on a phone or tablet, which also includes speakers.

How do these morons that can't match the convenience of existing privacy nightmares, or even DIY stuff, continue to get VC funding?

  • You had me, until the second-half of your last sentence. Its more like we can't rely on perfectly rational systems, because we don't comply, neither perfectly nor rationally.

  • You didn't lie to her. You told her the truth up-front and she refused to accept it, intimidating you into a relationship.FUCKING.RUN.No warning, no head's up, just pack your shit and get out when she's out of the house one day. She's proven she's too immature and violent to be trusted, unless you like having, at a minimum, your stuff broken, abused, destroyed, and probably worse, like more baseless accusations.

  • You can buy add-ons for this to auto-generate standard gear-forms and threads/bolts/holes. It is also parametric.

  • Indeed. Call me when metal soviet-tank-girl-aesthetic cybernetic limbs with hiden extra functions that inspire fear and disgust in the elites, not just for "mobility aide"s likely to be rejected at both recycling centers and land-fills.

Putin doesn't have the guts to give those veterans what they need, if not deserve.

  • I thought that too. I was almost pleased with the state of the world for a few months, over that misunderstanding.

  • His progress is exceptional, but far from impossible, without doping. He was in the right age-bracket for it as well.

  • The corpos' owners' own "need" for shell-corporations, astro-turfing, bot-follower-accounts and such will torpedo this. The internet is going to suck for anyone that spends too much effort on playing by the rules, but that's already true.

Oh, and don't get me started on the inevitable impacts on advertisers' bottom-lines and corpo-providers' exposure to liability.

Basically, those who have the power who might toy with thinking or saying they want this, don't really, and those who are most certain they want this have neither the power nor understanding to make it happen.

  • Used to be able to get 20lb bags of the stuff. Throw it in a seed-spreader and walk it around. Now, I can only find 5lb bags, though the pests I was fighting seem to have been out-competed in recent years.

  • If I say "shut up", odds are about 99% it's because you're right. That other 1% of the time though ...

  • These projects collaborate and copy each-other's work way more than you would think. When one stagnates, others pick up the slack, and when one pulls ahead, the others increase their efforts to catch-up. More potential solutions for the same problems is a good thing.

  • Eliminate state capital-punishment. Make prisoners wear their convictions on their sleeves and only use solitary-for-protection while trials are still in-progress or pending. It'll work itself out.

  • Reads to me like someone paid electrician rates for every hour of labor involved. Much cheaper to do most of the work yourself and then have it inspected, or even then pay to have it fixed/brought-up-to-code/whatever.

Personally, I'm going the DIY route partially because I want it designed for inspection and servicability to a degree most installers would never accomodate, and certainly not for less than, say, 5x what it would cost to impliment myself.

  • NET price, the price you or I pay? Not at all. Gross/Wholesale? Maybe.

  • Nerd.

  • 35lbs is the single heaviest weight I have at the moment, and honestly, that's for workouts, not precise measurement. In all honesty, I mostly brought up weights and measures to explain what I meant by "reference materials" as a seperate category that happens to include some books, and is far from confined to them.

All that said, the single most extreme or "esoteric" such thing I own is a 24x36x6inch granite surface-plate I got free when some jackass abandoned it in his girl-friend's garage. No idea the quality or weight of it.
