  • I'm with you. Censorship is killing my sanity. But here's the issue.

We already have content restrictions in place to "protect" under 18s whether they're mature enough or not to see porn or gore. Physical and digital media have PEGI, BBFC, etc. ISPs have parental control - the UK has Content Lock. We have parents with personal preferences for their offspring's access.

National or global censorship is useless. In their insatiable quest for power and money the corporations and governments are trying to turn the internet into a child's internet. If these are the lengths they're willing to go to, if their intentions were honest, it would surely be easier to let the adults have the freedom of adults and build a second internet for children. Maybe age lock that. Instead of killing everything consenting adults made.

This is equivalent to taking a bar, stripping out the slot machine, alcoholic drinks and erotic dancers, adding a ballpit, replacing live sports with cartoons and still checking ID at the door. Except now they want to swap ID for fingerprints.

  • Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Part of the Peter Pan cash cow extended universe, I guess

  • As someone outside America's (and upper-class England's) sphere of education extortion, those who pirate and distribute textbooks are true gods - we get to learn for free for fifteen years, so should everyone.

  • Ground beef is too expensive

I hear you, it hurts to double the cost of buying groceries with fresh meat

  • It's good to know that those are being acted on, but hell. AI should be a tool, not a replacement. Maybe companies will figure that out someday

  • I wouldn't have thought so, as none of these creators in my first test have used these methods for editing - their content is all vlog style, with the only edits involving audio effects and cuts between footage. I'm ruling nothing out until it's proven irrelevant, however.

  • True. I appreciate the call for free speech, but ever since the hateful have upped their public image significantly I learned that minimal tolerance moderation of said hateful folk would make for a much healthier society. I've also heard Odysee has been filling up with AI slop. Maybe there should be a dedicated switch for the user to decide if they want to see AI gen content. If we can't stop them, we can ignore them and close the door

  • Precisely. I know some creators (Sam Time, Legal Eagle) that dual upload to Odysee as a failsafe for YouTube's inevitable censorship, and Odysee being a decentralised space that prioritises freedom of speech means I see it as a good alternative, or stepping stone to Peertube.

Back in the day creators had their own blog websites for folk to access and subscribe. I believe this fragmentation is the best solution when aggregating sites like YouTube and Dailymotion become hostile.

  • I am not an established researcher, so I believe I have no legacy to justify a response from busy folk. I was referring less to myself not reaching out, and more to the unlikelihood of any responses. I am absolutely messaging creators who I see have a significant disparity between published and indexed videos.

  • I agree with local search, but I prefer more of a traditional algorithm-based search to generative AI. A solution I've seen (that is far more attainable than building your own search engine) is hosting a metasearch engine, which collates results from search engines, based on your own preferences of results. Or perhaps using someone else's established server if their preferences align with yours. Localised (on-device) search will be a gamechanger in many ways, but I believe a meaningful version of that is far off and potentially impractical to implement.

  • I'm not, but the sheer amount (nearly 50% in some cases) is suspicious. Save getting answers from the creators themselves, best I can do is keep collating data. Some of the affected channels' videos have no harmful content and millions of views per.. But I don't fully know yet.

  • I too see issues, but my clients are all some form of alternate app so I don't have a true baseline. On Grayjay some videos just stop loading halfway through, and I can't view it unless I switch to one of the other clients, and SmartTubeNext and YouTube with Sponsorblock both give me about a minute of black screen. NGL I prefer the black to unnecessarily invasive advertising

You shouldn't really have to pay, not when advertising is the way Google funds everything. Iirc advertising is 90% of their substantial income.

I am seeing more rules and system changes hurt creators, and more creators quit, complain about it, and/or actively recommend adblockers and Patreon donations.

  • I can see very little difference between the two, then again my PC refresh period is roughly eight years.

Both will run Monster Hunter Wilds with possibly 15% difference in framerate, but very manageable whichever you choose. I've listed below some ideal components to look for in a PC - if you can find a desktop with most of them your son will be set for a decade:

    CPU:

    • Intel Core Ultra 265K/F or higher
    • AMD Ryzen 7900X3D or higher (X3D > X)

    GPU:

    • Nvidia 4080, 5070 or higher (but if you can wait one month, Super variants are going to be released soon - October-November is always a huge time for tech releases)
    • AMD Ryzen 9070XT or XTX

    RAM:

    • Minimum 32GB, DDR5, 5200MHz.
    • Brands: Corsair, Crucial, Kingston and PNY are the top

    SSD:

    • Minimum 2TB, M.2 NVME, 6000MB/s sequential read.
    • Brands: Samsung, Western Digital Black/Blue, Seagate, Corsair and, again, Kingston

    PSU (Power Supply):

    • Brands: Corsair, MSI

Preference: Performance over RGB lighting aha

  • I also have an ASMR video I liked, with a man roleplaying as a tinkerer-scavenger, on a spacestation with a circular window behind him. Very high grade visuals & props. Now I don't know if he took the video down or if its one of MANY videos that have been going AWOL on YouTube's search algorithm, still existing on their database, still marked as public but not indexed. But I don't remember who it was despite checking ASMRtists like PhoenicianSailor

  • A movie I saw as a kid about the lives of a few people living on huge metal cities that were mobile, roaming the dried, decayed Earth on treads, occasionally sparring other cities that got too close like rival ships. There was an overhead scene of two kids running down a path near the edge, before chasing each other back into the buildings.

Think Mortal Engines. Except where Mortal Engines was released in 2018, I watched this movie when I was in my early teens at the latest. Before 2010.

Now here's the interesting thing: there was a Mortal Engines book released in 2001. But I absolutely do not believe I have or had the capacity for such a vivid mental recreation of the novel.

  • At least a couple are orgasmic. Hope this helps!
