  • It depends on the electricity fuel blend. So in the past if you had a lot of coal it could take a long time to "pay back" the carbon cost of a new EV. But as more and more renewables are coming online that payback period is getting shorter and shorter. In most places if they've put at least some effort into bringing down carbon emissions, EVs are a substantial improvement.

Of course, walking, biking, transit are all far superior. But if those aren't viable for some trips then EV is the next best option.

  • I agree with this strategy but I think you have to also concede that anti-electoralists have some good arguments too. Since voting is relatively low investment, my personal view is that it's best to pursue a variety of strategies. But for the vast majority of Americans for whom voting is their only political activity, I would challenge them to figure out what the next step is in becoming a more effective political actor. Frankly, there are a variety of actions a person can take that are way more impactful than voting. And this moment demands more from us than passive participation.

  • Unfortunately I think it must be assumed in this day and age that any content posted online publicly may be stored indefinitely, on any platform. Even if you delete it, there are bots scraping all your comments, and you won't be able to delete from those databases. So I'm not sure how much utility this feature would have today.

  • I feel very confident this is the case. And I also suspect that most of the "bots" or "shills" or whatever other inauthentic accounts people think they are identifying are just these same types of people who have unusual posting habits or communication styles. I've yet to see one iota of evidence that there are any accounts masquerading as something they're not to influence politics. The only actual bots I've seen are the boring spambots who just post scam links at a rapid rate.

  • Yeah I think it's way beyond what I would know how to do... I've also got some pretty crazy things happening in my life right now so I'm not looking to take on any big projects at this time. Maybe when things are back to normal.

Or I'll ask around and see if anyone else is interested in doing it.

  • I disagree they're fundamentally the same. Dems are more ambivalent about war compared to full throated support on the right (with some minor exceptions like Massie, Rand, etc.)

Kamala Harris would not be bombing Iran right now.

But yeah people should be doing a lot more than voting, there we agree.

  • Wow great comment. But I'd have to figure out who is going to host a local server first. I'm not super tech savvy personally, especially compared to Lemmings.

  • Isn't that what locking is for?

  • Oh wow this would be huge. The local sub is the main thing that keeps me coming back to Reddit.

However, it probably will take some local organizing to get it to fire in each area. Getting a critical mass for these is tough by just having randomly distributed global internet users join. Even with thousands of users, the California community on Lemmy is way less active than the sub for my city on Reddit.

  • Well, I had this issue from drinking too much orange juice. I did drink it often but not an extreme amount I'd say. But even lower levels of acidity can cause your teeth to weaken over time.

  • Yeah I thought the headline was silly as well. I'm not sure what Kamala has to do with soldiers murdering people today. Maybe she normalized it with her positions and statements but she's never had particularly much influence over any US military actions, and people who voted for her had even less.

  • The quality of the food only matters because our bodies can't handle it. If we could improve our teeth (and other body parts) to be more resilient and adapted to available food resources then it wouldn't be considered poor quality anymore.

  • Acidic food can dissolve your teeth. I'm aware of the involvement of bacteria but I didn't want to go into too much detail for this one-liner. The point is our teeth are very poorly designed to stay intact in the face of the dietary environment they are used for.

  • When do we get teeth that aren't made of a substance that our food literally dissolves? Seems like a major design flaw.

  • Nah that's only for the fascists. See Alex Pretti vs Kyle Rittenhouse.

  • Honestly if world leaders would just focus on killing each other and leave the rest of us out of it that would be a large improvement.

  • "Let one in"

What do you think I, personally, should have done to stop Trump that I did not do?

I get you're angry but this is a braindead political analysis. The US is a highly undemocratic country. Very few people wanted this to happen.

  • I'm not defending soldiers. I do think the position that it's wrong to join or support the US military is obviously correct. But of course that doesn't change the fact that we have no direct knowledge of why people do these things on an individual basis. Since you brought it up I thought I'd point that out. But I feel like now we're arguing just to argue.

It seemed clear to me. If that wasn't the intention then I don't know?

I'm just really sick of all of the finger-pointing between people about very insignificant actions people did or didn't do that may or may not have led us to this moment. I'd rather talk about how we get out of it.

  • I'm just making a statement about slacktivism. I don't have a problem with criticizing American troops.
