  • It's true the EU has a slight tendency to worry a lot about bureaucracy, and forms. Some people, I obviously would not be one of them, could even go as far as to say the EU cannot fart unless they filled a form and asked for a commission to validate the form, and then ask another commission to select a bureau that will validate the validation by the first commission. So, yeah, it's not perfect ;)

    That being said, ask the UK how good it felt to them (and to us, Europeans) trying to do business together after their Brexit took effect. That was a gigantic pain in the butt. A true kafkaesque level of absurd & nightmarish bureaucracy non-sense.

  • No ads, no tracking, that's exclusive to Lemmy and I would like it for that alone.

    People (aka, in Reddit language, 'content' or 'the stuff we write but they earn money with') are the same everywhere, I mean assholes and nice guys are not exclusive to any platform. There are just a lot less of us here than on Reddit. So, there is a lot less noise.

    Plus we have decent filtering tools, so we can even have less noise ;)

    Lemmy is tiny compared to Reddit and the niche communities I'm interested in are not very active but I don't care. I will keep posting here and not on Reddit as long as they won't change what I disagree with (which won't happen).

    I know, with TikTok brains becoming the norm 7 months ago may seems like veeeeery ancient history, but isn't Trump the current US president? Isn't his election the active presidential election? Trump is US politics, dude.

  • My spouse and I have been together for almost 30 years and I see no sign of us parting ways anytime soon. We're both persuaded we've lasted that long because we were both ok with the fact that the other is not perfect or faultless.

    I will let anyone decide for themselves what limits should be made in a couple, and I will keep ours to ourselves, but even crossing those limits it should always be ok to try to fix it provided both parties are doing it with the right mindset and a willingness to be/to act better.

    That's what we both think and that's how we managed to get through quite a few... difficult times, but that doesn't make it an indisputable truth either. It's just our 2 cents ;)

  • First thing first: it's absolutely normal to feel anxious.

    Maybe you could see him as you would see a stranger or, say, some remote uncle, come stay at home for a while? Don't have expectations because you don't know him? Like you said, you have little memories so take that as a starting point: your memories will be the ones you may start building together once he gets back home.

    Let him come home and see how things unfold. Also, be ok with him being and feeling awkward too. And with having some... adjustments issues. It's a huge change for him, too. Plus he may have more memories when he arrives, that coudl also hinder your first attempts at being together. I can't imagine being in prison for so long won't have left some deep marks on him, too so be ok with him screwing up a little.

    If I may ask, haven't your parents discussed him coming back with you already? If not, maybe it is something you may want to discuss with them openly?

    Not knowing you or your parents and your brother, it's hard to be more specific I'm afraid.

    There is no such thing as a (modern) language that is not assembled from borrowing from other languages. So even speaking a single language, one may already be 'borrowing' from quite a few more. Add to that many of us will speak at least two languages (native + English), or more.

    So yeah, like many, I borrow words and expressions from any of the languages I speak, even more so with those words and expressions I have a sweet spot for ;)

  • Yes of course the answer is stop eating fast food. Live in a cave, don’t reproduce, that is how we create the least waste. Im not suggesting that. Im saying it’s gross that these companies willingly waste so much when we don’t really need to.

    • Not going to fast food does not mean to stop eating, hopefully for your health.
    • Nor does it mean to stop reproducing... I don't now about you, but I seldom fuck in public places.
    • And it does not mean living in a cave either unless one considers going to a fast-food the apex of a great night out? Which I don't... but I also don't consider a fast-food a restaurant at all.

    Wrong. We produce less waste by closely studying our habits and usages and figuring out ways to change them to produce less waste, not by expecting a corporation to do it for us because they will only change (but they will) the second their financial results fall because they insist on selling (shit food and) wrapping their consumers refuse to buy. Until then...

    Meanwhile, I'll go back into my cave that's surrounded by wonderful places one can go eat in the streets nearby, places who serve some real food without any wrapping. Odd, I know but we also have that stupid giant metal tower around here, and those fancy museums, the entire world likes to visit. And we eat baguettes.

    Stop eating at fast-food, maybe?

    My spouse and I have not been offered a straw, or a cup with a lid, packages or wrappers of any sort since we've quit going to fast-food (or joint selling any kind of industrially processed turd food), that was some 20 or 30 years ago.

    We get served in a real plate, use real silverware (sorry, I don't know the English word to say 'fork, knife and spoon'), drink (no soda) in a real glass and have our coffee served in a real cup. LIke we woudl at home save the food is not cooked by us but is also fresh and not prepackaged (it helps to locate those restaurants that are real restaurants, not the many that are just microwaving prepackaged stuff)

    • Too bad we're extinguishing many species already, as we're trying hard to destroy our very own ecosystem, without much consideration if it's not the stupidest thing we can ever do and maybe the last we will ever do? And since we're good at what we do, we're doing it at a scale and at a speed that is not leaving much hope to be able to change direction, and that won't leave much hope either to quite a few other living species we're dragging to their doom alongside with us. At least, we can rejoice knowing we will have reduced economic waste in livestock.

    Je taquinais juste un peu en regard de ce que j'ai pu lire ici et là dans d'autres discussions. Il y a un paquet de trucs excellents qui viennent des USA, et il y a un paquet de merdes, aussi ;)

    Tout cela pour dire que tu es pas le premier que je vois passer à en dire du bien, même si j’ai pas vraiment l’intention de m’en servir ça fait plaisir de savoir que des bonnes alternatives existent.

    Naïf, j'aurais aimé ne jamais avoir à me soucier du pays d'origine de mon moteur de recherche (ou de quoi que ce soit d'autre) mais le monde ayant changé comme il l'a récemment fait et je ne pense qu'il y ai la moindre possibilité de faire marche arrière... disons que j'aurais été ravi de pouvoir signaler que Kagi était made in EU. Ce n'est pas le cas, mais je serai ravi de pouvoir le dire le jour où nous aurons une alternative comparable made in EU (c'est aussi pour ça que j'utilise Qwant plus que Kagi, même si je préfère les résultats de Kagi).

  • Je sais que ce qui est payant et made in USA n'a pas top la cote mais, à côté de Qwant (Fr) comme moteur de recherche j'utilise Kagi (US et payant, pas sur la tête merci ;) que je trouve, justement, assez bon pour ne pas regretter de leur filer des sous : pas de pub, pas de SEO, pas de tracking et des outils plutôt pas mal foutus. Une efficacité dans la recherche qui rappelle la lointaine époque, que les plus jeunes n’auront peut-être jamais connue, où Google Search innovait et proposait les sites les plus intéressants plutôt que les sites qui payent le plus…

    Bref, ça marche bien mais c'est payant et tout le monde peut pas dépenser des sous pour un moteur de recherche.

    Donc, et c’est ce qui motive mon message : si vous connaissez des bibliothécaires, c'est peut-être leur moment de leur signaler la nouvelle initiative de Kagi (apparemment c'est valable mondialement): le moteur de recherche est offert gratuitement à toutes les bibliothèques publiques/écoles.

    (A noter qu'ils ont aussi commencé à changer leur plan gratuit pour encourager plus de monde à l'essayer: on pourra bientôt (d'ici 15 jours max, si c'est pas déjà fait) utiliser 50 recherches sans devoir se créer un compte gratuit avec 100 de plus, quand on se crée un compte.)

    Disclaimer: je suis pas sponsorisé par Kagi (c'est plutôt moi le sponsor, pour le coup ;) mais je le trouve un excellent outil. Du coup, une version gratuite pour les bibliothèques me semble une chouette initiative. L’occasion de leur proposer un meilleur moteur de recherche qui, s’il n’est pas moins US a le mérite de se focus exclusivement sur la qualité des résultats, de fonctionner sans tracking et d’être plutôt bien fait.
