I'm currently testing https://piefed.social/u/Libb all my new participation will be posted there, at least for the time being.

A 50-something French dude that's old enough to think blogs are still cool, if not cooler than ever. Also, I like to write and to sketch.https://thefoolwithapen.com/

  • Any browser is an alternative to any other browser, IMO.

But they can't run the same extensions, hence the fact that there is store for FF browsers and another one for chromium browsers. Since people can be very picky regarding their favorite extensions. So, suggesting some FF-based browser as an alternative to a Chromium-based one is the best way to disappoint quite a few potential users... for no good reason.

They all have the same purpose.

Like all computer or phone have the same purpose, still people will prefer one brand over the others, on even in one brand, one model of the other. Despite all of them being phones (or computers). Should we forbid people any choice because you consider it's not important in you use case?

  • In French, it would be better to use "Achetez" (third person plural, considerate the polite form) instead of the much more informal "Achète".

Also, I would suggest to make circle of stars broader, broad enough to include the slogan in its entirety. There is room left around each flag for that, and fr the few ones where it won't be enough (like the last one) it won't be enough, it should be ok to make the font a tad smaller/play with spacing on that one flag.

    Edit: clarification.

  • I don't miss karma being a thing (and people focusing on growing it by pleasing as many as possible, instead of focusing on content) but I'm also past the age of getting good/bad grades for doing my homework or for participating in class ;)

I'm pretty sure introducing karma will boost low effort reddit-like posts. And those don't need any encouragement, imho.

  • !journaling@sh.itjust.works keeps on growing (437 users, today), but still very little participation.

I'm counting on the new subscribers to make a difference in the long run as I imagine most of the old user base is AFK like the original admin/creator (there were approx 200-230 users when I was given the keys to the community, and it had been hibernating for at the very least a whole year before I started posting). Hopefully with the number of new users steadily growing, and them becoming less 'new' a few should start participate more ;)

  • Don't be (it will not help you and it won't change a thing). Not forgetting that they're free to do whatever they want. No one is right or wrong, it's just... not ideal as it is ;)

Also, seeing how this is becoming kinda trendy topic relayed outside Lemmy I would not be surprised to see even more appearing. Say 'use-european' 'Support-european' 'made-in-Europe' (this one has my preference :p) and their obvious mirrors 'made-in-the-EU', 'support-the-EU', and so on.

I don't know about the other users but I can't be bothered with too many similar communities (2 is really a maximum as far as I'm concerned, after that it's just a mess that requires way too much time/energy from me to get anything out of it). So, I will ignore trends and focus on those communities whose moderation/participation I appreciate the most ;)

  • Yes, there are quite a few approximations in the list ;)

in the EU/Western Europe, as an e mail provider I would suggest in no order: maibox.org, proton, tuta and owning your own domain but that one last option (teh best one, imho) may already be too technical for most users.

  • LibreWolf is not an alternative to chrome, it's a fork of FF. It won't run Chrome extensions... which chrome users would likely expect to be able to run.

For a Chrome alternative, I use Vivaldi (which is based in the EU)As a Firefox alternative, I use Waterfox

  • It's an email client, not an email provider. It can be used to receive/send emails from almost any provider, not to create new ones.

  • LO is good software.

It replaced MSOffice Word for me (and I had been using Word since the early 90s). It also has a few extensions one may want to consider adding. Stuff like extra dictionaries for example, or better (than the default provided) ePub/HTML export tools.

  • +1

Not forgetting the 'Fisher Space Pen Company' (the ones that make the ballpoint pen used by NASA astronauts, it works in zero gravity). Their pressurized ink refills are really excellent, also the look of their 'Bullet' pen (considering the name, on could say they're really Americans ;)) is kinda clever but I always considered its ergonomics subpar while writing.

  • Super, thx!

  • Marcel Bich invented BIC pens and I think it’s still French

Indeed. The PDF I linked, retracing the history of the company is nicely made (detailed enough to get a nice overview edit: but not detailed enough to get too boring ;))

Apple is American FYI. I feel like it’s not mentioned enough.

Sorry, I'm not sure to see what's the link with pens?

  • Those two services have strengths but they also have some drawbacks, that are more or less painful depending one's needs. If there are people out there who feel so empty that they can't stand any critics concerning a product they think is great, well, what can I say? I'm so sorry for them.

  • Get that shit off my eyeballs, I paid for this product.

You should try Proton, then /s

Proton constantly tries to push you to upgrade to their next plaid plan too. So much so that this coupled with still zero fucking support for Proton Drive under Linux are the two reasons I have cancelled my paid Proton plan... and I had been paying for years.

    edit: typos

  • Thx, I didn't know about them. I would love to see more people re-discover anything Lino and small press related... Anything that may encourage them express themselves and maybe try fanzines or 'zines', as young people call them nowadays.

In the 80s, I was heavy into that and that was so exciting. Being much older today, I'm obviously not the target audience of most zines anymore but a majority of the ones I've had an opportunity to read felt a lot less exciting to me. Some are true works of art, no discussion about that, but they're also very often so... politically-correct and so self-conscious, so afraid to cross anyone as to not dare much if anything. But like I said, I'm now much older and not the target audience for zines anymore.

  • +1 to that. I used to use their pencils (graphite) a lot

  • Pilot is great, and not just with pens. I love their fountain pens a lot too be it their cheap lines and their much more expensive ones—my all time favorite fountain pen is their larger Falcon (the metal bodied one) with its flex nib. I also quite like my Mitsubishi uni-ball Eye Fine and Micro rollerballs (both waterproof ink, btw) but none of those are made in Europe ;)

  • +1 to that, they have great products. Rosemary & Co.

In France, one may want to check Raphael. I would say theire offer is a bit too complex to my taste but they have some real great brushes ;)
