  • Hardware is hardware. Whether it is US, China, etc the most vital component ends up being the OS at the end. It is the OS that you are entrusting the programs and apps being run and the accounts being logged into.

If you want security and privacy, grapheneOS appears to be the best option for OS. Something can be secure but not private, and private but not secure. Example being running /e/os or lineageOS on supported hardware might be more private but might not be as secure as stock Google on a Pixel or iOS with lot of times inability to relock the bootloader.

Phones do not have the luxury of PCs with large range of supported hardware with lot of freedom to install different operating systems without issue. There isn't a luxury of the perfect private and secure phone to purchase.

You look among what is available to find what lets you install a non corporate run OS that is as secure as possible.

  • It works for me in desktop mode with Steam Launcher not running. Maybe their OS got corrupted and they need to do a reinstall.

  • A bigger issue is that the Steam Deck touchpads don't work without Steam being open. A more open approach would have been to write independent driver software for the touchpads.

It works for me when I tested it in desktop mode with the Steam Launcher not running.

  • Some people truly are really boring people. They have no genuine interests or hobbies, which ends up being those people who often say things like they'd work even if they were rich. There's nothing for them beyond work.

  • If someone is worried about the FBI I don't think that putting trust in a US company who's CEO has very close ties to the current US administration is a wise idea.

I'd be seeking hardware to run an OS like GrapheneOS. Going with iOS in the US seems as wise as someone in China going with Xiaomi if they are trying to go under the radar of China's Ministry of State Security.

  • Good. If the memory sector is ignoring the consumer sector which also includes large corporations like Dell that sell direct to consumers from regular people to large corporations ram manufacturers deserve to start losing a chunk of their previous business.

Individually we don't matter. But, Dell, HP, Acer, and Asus potentially opting for other sources is a big deal.

They need to learn the consequences of going all in on AI data centers.

  • We always got piracy to fall back on if they pull that.

  • Its lighter and the size of an ipod nano. And I don't care if it is dropped or breaks and there's nothing important on it.

  • When I go on runs I don't want to be carrying a phone.

  • I wonder if apple still provides battery replacement for it.

  • Yeah, it's like consoles vs PCs. Those who are hardcore PC prefer it due to all the flexibility it provides while hardcore console people find PC too troublesome and complicated.

Which is also the case for smart phones vs PCs where PC is too complicated in that aspect too with people preferring easy to use sandbox and don't even know what a file explorer is.

This is one of those cases where as opposed to people not adopting new tech because they are less educated like old people had trouble comprehending the Internet its more tech and privacy educated individuals being aware of the risks. And even if they use AI they'd opt for a locally run open source instance over the corporate provided ones the masses flock to.

Like people who set up their own personal security camera system versus those who mindless pick up a Blink camera without a second thought.

  • I got recommended it when I was looking for something similar to Fargo. It's so good but came out during a time when Amazon wasn't that far into streaming, so didn't get proper marketing to make people aware of such a gem.

  • They get access to all emails used for banking, shopping, social media accounts, etc. Depends on if you are fine with them being able to build a detailed profile off your emails.

Ads is like the least problematic aspect.

  • Email to avoid email providers from companies like Google or Microsoft.

  • Someone should tell them it is possible to use reddit and also lemmy. And reddit removing posts is a good reason to use both, so content that disappears on reddit continues to be accessible on the fediverse.

  • I think the best way to convince people to use the fediverse is by pointing out they are likely already using social media other than just reddit, so they should add the fediverse into the mix instead of being so hesitant about it.

Trying to make it like a reddit replacement I think is adding some barrier to adoption psychologically. But, these same people are fine using reddit, twitter, instagram, threads, tiktok, bluesky, etc. So it's not like they dont have room to also use the fediverse like lemmy.

  • Yeah, it's crazy that someone could have gotten like a Ryzen 5 1600 then upgraded to a 5800x3D around 5 years later without needing to buy a new motherboard, which usually can mean having to buy a new set of ram too.

For a long time just doing a new build if upgrading to a newer CPU used to be the thing when Intel was dominant.

  • Yeah, and when CPU is the bottleneck upgrading the CPU, mobo, and ram but not the GPU.

This time though I only upgraded the CPU, since AM4 had supported multiple generations of CPUs. One of the best things to happen for PC.

  • I just keep hearing claims, but nothing actually definitive when it comes to sources. Do you have any actual evidence that price is not supposed to be lower, because I don't see clear language stating that in the steam key documentation.

And then when it comes to real world price tracking it doesn't fit with the claims that devs aren't allowed to sell steam keys cheaper.

That's what makes it unclear. What is the definition of not worse or comparable? It could be interrupted as $41 vs $31 meeting the definition while selling for $10 but going no lower than $41 would be considered a breech. There's no clear language of it has to be equal or can't be lower. It's language with a lot of flexibility.

That's why I don't feel like claims of people saying Steam keys can't be lower with such confidence is appropriate. The sources we have at hand isn't cut and dry and actual prices don't fit those claims either to state it as a fact.
