  • Also the toxicity that is implied to exist by this post is pretty rare really. Even back when I was using Reddit, toxicity generally sank to the bottom of comment sections, and even more so here. When I got into D&D close to the beginning of 5e, some online voices on YouTube for example carried this toxicity but nowadays, most voices are far newer and friendly.

    In general, most people are more interested in what happens at their table instead of all tables, and the rules are just guidelines to aid that.

  • I actually doubt it. 30% of all of Hasbro's revenue comes from WotC (I've heard higher than 50% before, but a quick Google says 30%). Of that I've heard people say as high as 90% of WotC's income comes from Magic: The Gathering.

    Artists are paid a set rate, not commission for their art, but thousands of cards are purchased at very little cost to WotC. It's a golden goose that is literally keeping Hasbro afloat, they'd be fools to touch the operations of MtG with a 10ft pole, nevermind replace it's core with AI.

  • A pop star that has had an enormous rise to popularity this last year. By all accounts, she seems to be a very good person who's main controversies have been burn out and stress from becoming a household name overnight.

    You'd probably recognise a fair few if her songs from just hearing them in public. A lot of songs from her album were very well received.

  • The most common cheat is probably gaining money or experience, but there have always been pretty extensive mod menus for GTA Online with tools from invincibility to making your vehicles rainbow, to randomly causing other players to explode or setting hundreds of muggers on them.

    In 2015ish, I used to cheat, other than getting rich, all I was interested in doing was making an indestructible chrome bus with smoke trails that I'd drive around picking up players in, to teleport us all to North Yankton and back like a tour guide.

  • I'm just really hoping that whatever they intend to use AI for isn't art. Ideally there is enough backlash to this that they backpedal again for a year or so, but failing that, I do not want to see it touch the art at all.

    In my opinion, WotC is an art company. I don't really see anything better in 2024 D&D 5e to what is expected in Tales of the Valiant 5e or is in Level up Advanced 5e, or for that matter, any RPG really. The only thing they excel on is the money behind them to have an entirely different relationship with artists. And that's not mentioning Magic the Gathering which needs the art even more.

    There aren't that many avenues for AI in D&D. You can't really replace the game design due to the fact that AI can't really problem solve or innovate. It's already likely used internally by the finance departments etc, hell it's built into Microsoft programs, it course it is used. It can't really be sued to make the writing more efficient because the writing of a D&D book is sacred, you can't change the word prone to lying down for readability for example.

    So it's likely coming for art or WotC are returning to the idea of AI DMs, which is silly and I have no interest in, and I can't imagine it being anything but a totally adjacent product to D&D.

    I can't wait to see what evil and terrible way I'm proved wrong.

  • There's a book called Tabletop Role-playing Therapy: A Guide for the Clinician Game Master by Dr Megan A. Connel that's a really standout resource about this, she appeared on the official D&D podcast a year or so ago talking about it.

    I'd say that this is more a resource for therapists to use TTRPGs than it is for DMs to act as therapists for their players. There's a fine line between accommodating your players' preferences and needs and providing unwanted therapy; if you want to actually put any therapy techniques into your game, ask your players approval first.

  • I don't want to throw the word enshitiffication around, especially when I'm not sure if I can spell it, but the platforms that people jump ship to when that happens are probably especially vulnerable to people jumping ship again.

    I can't imagine Mozilla effectively marketing Firefox as anything but the bullshit free browser, and when they lose that, people will just move to the next actual bullshit free option.

  • This film won't happen. Skibidi toilet had 15 mins of fame for generation alpha and only had legs from older generations not understanding it because it's toilet humour and absurd.

    The kids already don't care about it. If the Minecraft movie went through development hell for 10 years, this movie is not getting made when they realise the kids already don't give a shit.

  • It's normally a long image thing. Because this is multiple full resolution images stitched together vertically, the hosting site compresses it's dimensions, even if it's not that large of a file.

  • What is your favorite movie? Or, what is your favorite genre of film?

  • I'm a 50/50 toss up between two reasonably different genres.

    The first is coming of age films, particularly queer ones. My go to film to call my favourite is Call me By Your Name, I also love Stand By Me, Aftersun and have a huge soft spot for Kiki's delivery service.

    The other 'genre' is dramas / thrillers that get pretty fixated on madness, particularly from the protagonist. There will be Blood is my go to second film to say, and I love Apocalypse Now, Perfect Blue, The Witch and The lighthouse.

    I'm not as much fan of when the genres overlap however, although that may be because of how small the sample size is. There are quite a few films that have a young protagonist who is finding themselves, who may end up idolising another to the point that the film falls into being a thriller. We had Saltburn last year, which people often compare to The Talented Mr Ripley, and I do enjoy these films but I never get that milestone feeling that I've just experienced a piece of media that has profoundly impacted me. The only thing that exists in this shared space is one of my favourite novels; The Picture of Dorian Gray.

  • I was at the end of school during the 2016 election and my closest friend in my Comp-Sci class who I'd known from 11 was in the far right pipeline; this person found Hillary absolute abhorrent, loved trump and was generally the 2016 Pepe style crypto-facist. We live in the UK too, so this is even less common than it probably was in the USA.

    When school ended, I stopped speaking to this person, but a few years ago saw that she's come out as a trans woman. I'm happy for her and not really keen to reconnect at all, but oh boy am I nosy about the timeline of her political views. I wonder if she still holds them, was struggling with internalised issues or just had a huge realisation at some point.

  • I've not seen gmaps taking these kinds of routes. I'm UK based if it makes any difference at all, but I'm always grateful for my route seeming to prefer a smooth choice to the absolute fastest.
