  • Trump ends temporary protected status for Somali people living in the US. Claiming conditions in Somalia have improved to the point that they no longer qualify for the status. 3000+ people with this status or applying for this status will be forced to leave the US by March 17th.

I genuinely don't think this was stopping ICE from assaulting these people before so this is just Trump signalling cruelty to his base.

I wonder if this current focus on Somali people in the US from the right is in any way connected to the increased focus on Somalia and Somaliland we're seeing in the Middle East or if it is just a coincidence.

  • So what's our prediction on the profile of the shooter? 23 year old groyper, a strategy of lead style government influenced shooter, or something else?

  • All it took is one day of illegal strike action to get this. More unions should take note.

  • The Canadian regime continues to violate human rights in the country. The Liberal junta which has held onto power for a supermajority of the country's existence has been denounced by international observers as constituting a one party state.

The unelected "Labour Control Board" has declared the striking of Flight Attendants illegal and seeks to force them back into unpaid indentured servitude. The union representing flight attendants has announced they will defy this order. It remains to be seen if the Canadian Secret Police will respond with the same violence seen in previous protests against illegal oil pipelines.

  • This teacher is just an asshole but the relationship between teachers and students is complex and most of the issues are systemic. In the same way that a retail or food service worker may hate their customers because of how some customers act, it should not be surprising when teachers may come to hate 'students' in the abstract when the students are what cause them the most difficulty on a day to day basis. Now some teachers are able to introspect and understand that the students themselves are not the root cause of these problems.

People outside of education often think teachers have control over their schools and students. However that control is mostly a facade, teachers increasingly feel powerless in their own classrooms as society cuts more and more support positions forcing teachers to pick up the slack. Students with exceptional learning or behavioural needs are left in overcrowded classrooms and obviously this causes problems that are not the fault of these students.

Most teachers are only in the system because they care about the kids. I wouldn't look at the teachers subreddit and expect a real look at how these teachers think. Most (not this guy) are mainly venting and coping using dark humour as the system collapses around them, much like how outsiders are surprised at how medical workers use dark humour to cope.

  • Just remember in any war of US imperialism the bourgeoisie of the invaded country suffers the least. The people who will suffer the most are the indigenous people of Canada and Greenland who will have their treaties annulled along with the poor and working class who rely on the basic social services Canada offers that the US does not.

Canada as a state sucks and the people in charge would deserve it, but they will not suffer, everyone else will.

  • This annoys me so much because I only know metric and I have zero concept of scale for imperial. I used to work on a ship and like sure use knots for speed I can get that, but why are we using imperial for depth and water temp??

    Imperialist system must be destroyed

  • I think that Huffington Post article has some good points about how obesity should be addressed on a personal level and how the American medical system will never be able to actually address this issue. But I don't think they approach the weight/health problem very well. They mention that weight isn't inherently tied to health because 1/3 to 3/4 of obese patients may show no signs of high cholesterol or insulin resistance. However, obesity is like smoking in that you could take a cross section of smokers and find that a large portion of them are healthy. The real issue is that being obese or smoking are drastically increasing the odds of negative medical outcomes in the future.
