  • I have moved twice by a bike & trailer, although both times the distance was just a couple blocks. The first time I moved all my stuff (except bed) to another flat and the second time we moved our bike shop to another location, for some heavier items we used a car. Also I’ve carried furniture on a bike, one time a pretty hefty tv table on the rack (with another person walking by and balancing it). I find it amusing that it’s possible to carry a whole table on a bike but not in a (regular) car! :D

  • Swimming pool drains. I panic if I get above one. No idea why. I used to love swimming/diving as a kid but I always made sure to stay as far away as I can from the drains. I didn’t go to a swimming pool for like 20 years (mostly because of body dysforia but the drains did play a role as well), only recently I’ve been to a spa - and I’m like a cat with a cucumber around the drains.

Oh, and leeches. Never want to see one of those fuckers in real life.

Also I have a fear of getting worms. One of my late cats got that type which, if in a wrong host, can travel to the eyes.

  • I had a fancy ass futon for about 2 years, first on the floor and then with all kinds of extensions (like a mattress topper and slatted base) it was killing my back. After that I’ve tried 3 different mattresses (two spring ones and a memory foam) and now finally a proper box spring bed from an actual furniture store that the salesperson helped us choose – and my dog does it make a difference! Also buying a good pillow helped a ton. I’ve decided I’m getting too old to sleep in an unsuitable bed. Most of the hotel beds I’ve slept in after getting the new bed feel like crap.

  • We have taloyhtiö which is similar. The one I live in at the moment is pretty good, we even have our own janitor which is rare nowadays. Today I called the janitor about a leaking pipe and they arranged a plumber for tomorrow, no hassle.

The housing cooperative is much liked and there are elderly people living here that were born in these houses and never lived elsewhere. It’s not a posh neighbourhood either, which is nice. Just normal people.

But of course it varies a lot. Here most of the people who own the flats live in them, and the board members too, but the housing cooperatives whose boards are filled with landlords tend to minimize the upkeep and services. And when also the tenants change all the time the community that would look after itself doesn’t have a chance to grow.
