  • I think more people would use Linux if it were a simpler process. The ones I know fed up with Microsoft have gone with Macbooks.

  • I was hesitant to say anything at first but I am glad I did. Everyone so far has been wonderful and supportive.

Kudos to you all for helping a stranger with no skill or tech savvy. I WILL try again.

  • Appreciate the link!

Rufus is what the instructions said to download and then a list of prompts to enter in the command line. I understand none of those prompts, literally a completely different language.

I am using an old laptop that has windows 7 on it. Figured it didn't matter if I screwed that up since it was old and not in use.

  • The hard part is getting the software on a usb drive to use on the old laptop. I haven't figured out what the instructions mean in order to implement. I have a lot of learning to do.

  • I suppose it is automatic on Windows so it has the illusion of being easy. I can honestly say, I have not had to install anything after I hit the update button. I am also old and don't use a computer every day.

  • I want to figure it out if for no other reason than to prove to myself I am not too old to learn new tricks!

  • Microsoft is unable to track local accounts as thoroughly.

I was finally going to attempt installing Linux Mint only to find out it is not as simple as some say. I know less than nothing about computers and then there are mirrors you have to choose from to download. I have no idea what would be a safe secure mirror.

Then you have to install other software I have no knowledge of to make a bootable drive....I am just not intelligent enough I suppose. I was hoping it was a simple download process.

I am just a tad bit frustrated!

  • They do not support dark mode on web pages if this is important to you. Reason given is easy to fingerprint.

  • Even paying for apps and services does not stop the collecting and selling of your data.

  • Maybe patent yourself would work better...hmmm

  • I am tired of my information making companies lots of money instead of me.(privacy issues aside) Shame you can't copyright yourself at birth.

  • Doesn't scanning before upload imply the encryption is broken somewhere? Is that the point, to remove encryption? Forgive my naivete.

  • Thing is, most people aren't even going to bother trying it.

Here is to that changing. Society needs better options regular users will be able to just purchase and go, imo.

  • Perhaps if I wish really, really hard they will. I just will not hold my breath!

  • Most are not sure how to safely and properly install a new OS. If a computer came with Linux already pre-installed instead of Windows, count me in!

  • I do. Companies do seem to be adding them everywhere. Eventually everything will showcase ads because not enough consumers were against it. Apps that are part of the OS, imo, should not have any ads, regardless of price point for the device.

  • While the new UI offers mostly a bloatware-free experience, it’s the ads that are annoying. For starters, the pre-installed Weather App, although can be deleted, is LOADED with ads. The ad loading also causes the app to feel super jittery and slow. So, I’d get rid of that first. Secondly, it’s the Moto Hub, which is actually a hub of ugly ads and shady app recommendations.

There’s a Moto Hub home screen widget as well, which comes preloaded and shows ads. Moto Hub also spams you with not-so-appealing notifications. So, that’s the second thing you’d want to force stop since you can’t uninstall.

I am so tired of companies being allowed to shove ads everywhere!

  • In my unpopular opinion, most of the information collected is unnecessary and should not be allowed. Then there would not be anything to leak. Of course this will not make big tech more profit so, who cares...

  • Thanks! My laptop is from 2020. Decent but not top of the line by today's standard. I hope to be the newest Linux convert!
