  • I think the element of it that I don't particularly like is how they frame themselves as people who value their time and mental health because they carry around a second, intentionally limited device. They kind of play this "social media is really bad, phones are really addictive" angle but then they don't actually give up on any of that stuff because they still have their extremely expensive high-end folding phone on them at all times as well. It all feels so performative to me, like they're not actually willing to make sacrifices themselves but still want the social cred/respect from pretending to be aware of the problem and part of the solution. But they're not, really, because they're entertaining this fantasy where phone addicts can magically get their lives back without changing their relationship with phones. If anything, they are contributing to the problem by encouraging people to buy and use even more devices.

I much prefer the anti-addiction/"minimal" phones that are either a) very small or b) have an e-ink screen, but are still marketed as an actual phone (not a "secondary" device). Those manufacturers intentionally put up walls to frustrate and force the owner to change their habits and re-wire their brain, rather than pushing this fake "you can have your cake and eat it too" philosophy to combating addiction.

  • That was definitely part of it, but I think they also wrote themselves into a corner in previous seasons by not properly laying the groundwork for any of the supernatural stuff. In Season 5, they had to constantly infodump the viewers in those "plan" scenes to keep up.

  • It's more common than people realise within the phone industry. The Titan 2 is using old Blackberry Passport displays and the new iKKO Mind One is using a display that is seen on some handheld retro gaming devices. Fairphone has historically used a lot of generic parts too. These smaller companies generally don't have the money or power to get everything custom designed, and re-using existing parts ensures long-term stock availability.

  • There's absolutely no way that magnetic keyboard delivers a typing experience even close to this device, which has clearly been designed entirely with typing in mind. Even the normal Clicks keyboards for iPhones were actually kinda dogshit because the phones they were designed for are so large that the weighting was entirely off. The Communicator will be way more balanced in the hand and it has a sloped back for even more comfort and security while typing. It's a phone for people who prioritise the typing experience above all else, which is admittedly a small group, but it's not the same as a magnetic accessory keyboard.

  • They’re afraid to go full bore advertising it as a minimalist alternative. If they weren’t, they would have offered more thoughtful features beyond the (admittedly great) notifications-only home screen. But that’s secretly who this phone is for. I am sure they’re just afraid to pigeonhole it. Calling it a second phone is silly and will sell it to about 50 people but it leaves any other potential buyer to interpret what it is and why they might want it for themselves. It’s a…whatever strategy.

I do think there is also just an aspect of the people running this company living in a bit of a tech bubble where they are constantly changing their phones and carrying around multiple at the same time. The "second phone" thing gets pushed constantly by tech YouTubers like Michael Fisher (who is behind Clicks), so much so that the term "daily driver" has become normal lexicon for these people. No one in the real world talks about their phone like this, it's just our phone. We don't have another one, unless it's an older model sitting in a drawer somewhere. I'm not sure YouTubers understand this, though.

  • You can download "modded" versions that have all the paywalled features unlocked, but it seems like a bit of an unnecessary risk when there are so many other great, free launchers out there.

  • One of my favourites over the last few years. Excited to see it return!

  • One of the few names in Android-related journalism I actually know because he consistently delivered interesting, in-depth articles that were based on his own research. So much higher quality than someone just re-writing a 10 word "rumour" tweet from some nobody into something 10x longer, then adding a clickbait title on the top.

  • Again this is just in my experience, but it's definitely an older generation (like Gen X and up) order. A lot of these people didn't grow up with espresso coffee and they still drink garbage instant coffee + hot water and some milk at home. That's what coffee is to them, so when they go out they get a flat white because it's the closest thing to what they drink at home. If they want something fancier they'll order a cappuccino and if they're not a milk drinker they'll get a long black. Because they drink coffee at home in the same way as they drink tea (add boiling water and sip over a very long period) they often ask for their flat white to be "extra hot", which usually means absolutely scalding. This completely ruins the milk but they don't care as long as they can sit there and sip it for like 2 hours while chatting. The concept of coffee as something to be enjoyed immediately upon serving and in a short amount of time is completely foreign to them.

  • I did a bit of reading of the main subreddit for the show and a lot of the complaining was about loose ends (what happened to X character?), plot holes and illogical sequences in the final battle and frustration with the amount of meaningful character development some characters did or did not receive. There were also a disturbing about of people upset because Mike didn't magically turn gay and hook up with Will (??????????).

I think some of the complaints were fair but the show has been this bad for a long time. All things considered, I actually thought it was a decent finale and it had one of the better open endings I've seen. Like with a lot of these character-driven young adult shows, I get the feeling a lot of viewers developed parasocial relationships with the characters and had a hard time letting go. They are in so deep that they lose sight of the fact that the characters and world as it exists in their head is not necessarily the same as the characters and world that are being written for the show. They can't admit that actually a lot of the magic of the show for them was completely born out of their own fan fiction communities, so when the finale inevitably fails to deliver it's a lot easier to pretend the show was always perfect until it suddenly wasn't rather than admit that it was never as great as they built it up to be.

  • This is a bit of a strange argument from the author because they start by saying people are ordering flat whites because they're "too afraid to admit" they want a latte, but later they claim that actually many people have no clue about coffee and don't even know what they're ordering. The latte is the most popular order by far in my experience, way more popular than both the flat white and the cappuccino. We are well beyond the point of people feeling embarrassed about ordering one. The second point about many people not knowing what they want /not knowing anything about coffee is much more accurate.

  • The DJs are usually pretty popular regardless, in my experience. They play later at night when there is less going on and people are drunk and just want to have a good time dancing under the bats.

  • Side Edge no longer works because I debloated my phone.

As in, you removed this feature through ADB?

  • No need to apologise, your rant was justified!

  • Sendle was dogshit. As someone who runs a small business and uses the much more reliable Australia Post, it always annoyed me when I'd buy something from another small business and they'd completely cheap out and use this terrible service to save a few dollars. It shows a complete lack of respect to the customer, for whose order we should feel responsible for until it arrives safely.

  • Okay, I can definitely understand what you mean now. Yes, it's pretty obviously designed to deceive.

  • As I understand, in that instance the guest decided not to attend. I think you're focusing on the wrong part of the story if you're trying to determine whether any of the guests were morally in the right/wrong or whether we should feel sorry for them. The problem is that the event is now caving to pressure, which completely kills its premise of being an open space for the discussion and sharing of ideas.

  • I guess she was also a bit younger when she started, maybe that changes her perception of it all. The adult stars like Clarke and Harington were in the spotlight from the first season. Like Turner had a few years of childhood where the internet and media mostly showed some restraint whereas Clarke was sexualised from day dot.

  • As long as your partner was okay with you only lasting ten minutes, I don't see a problem!
