  • Sounds like this only fixes the problem on the user's end. Developers are still getting screwed and many will stop maintaining their apps if they are forced to give their personal information to Google.

  • Nah, these "hacks" are very easy. Easier than installing and learning even the most basic of Linux distros.

  • I love this website, I have been a reader for most of those 20 years. Glad to hear they are keeping it going!

  • I always forget the story of Luther by the time another entry into the series comes along. I keep thinking it's done and then they'll randomly come out with something else.

  • I don't recall the show ever explaining how it worked, though.

  • The Man In The High Castle had a whole parallel world travel via mediation(?) sub-plot that was never explained because the character who could do it just randomly died. It was built up to be this big thing early on so it was very frustrating that they tried to pretend it never happened after the show was cancelled and they had to rush their final season.

  • Location and search history are particularly troubling especially when a user is not even using Google to search.

I dont think that's what is happening. You said "no precautions", so they gave you a list of what is collected by default. Google is the default search browser used by the default Google Assistant and the default browser (Chrome, Samsung Internet, etc all use Google Search).

  • Trinity College in Dublin has done a few studies in this area over the years. Here's a Forbes article about them (apologies in advance if it is paywalled).

Switching to open source, privacy-respecting apps is the most important part of obtaining privacy on Android and it sounds like you've done that. Whether you need to have the absolute highest level of protection against Google is really something only you can determine. For me, "stock" Android with as many FOSS replacements as possible is good enough.

  • It's probably being funded by all the tech bro Tolkien "fans" in Silicon Valley.

  • Unfortunately, it seems like Labor sees the Coalition falling apart as its chance to setup decades of dominance as the "sensible centre" party, rather than use the minimum two terms they now have to actually show some centre-left ambition.

  • RiseUp is slow and intended for activists and the politically vulnerable. It's not for poor people who cannot afford a $5 a month VPN. You will be fucking over people with much more legitimate use cases than yours if you start using it for torrenting.

  • Most of them are built around lazy algorithmic feeds like this. It's very hard to search for specific things, you're just expected to eat whatever they serve up to you.

  • I'm not sure about the medium-term future, but in the short-term you'll still be able to install APK files after the changes go through. Google is retaining installation via ADB for now, and applications like anyapk make it so that you don't need to plug your phone into a PC and open up the terminal.

  • It seems to be a fairly common problem on cheaper/mid-range headphones with plastic builds. I had some Shure SRH840s about a decade ago and they broke in a very similar fashion, but it was too difficult and expensive to repair them. Since then, I've only bought headphones that are fully modular and user-repairable. My main pair is the AIAIAI TMA-2 Studio, I've replaced several parts on them over the years (including the headband which lasted a long time but eventually broke last year).

  • This is how I feel as well lol

I'm willing to jump through some hoops for messaging services, assuming all my friends and family do the same, but for just general social media I am perfectly content to wave goodbye. It is so far from being an essential part of my life.

  • Mine broke yesterday. The headband base part unfortunately has a weak point and can snap out of nowhere under very minimal force (e.g. taking the headphones off your head, as happened to me). Hopefully it's an issue Fairphone has looked into and fixed, mine were a secondhand pair purchased a year ago so I'm not sure if there have been changes made since (seems maybe not, based on this recent thread). The replacement part appears to be exactly the same, but unfortunately because I'm in Australia it's too much money and effort to get two (it snapped at the same time on both sides) sent out via parcel forwarding (which, to be fair, I knew when I bought them). Hopefully I can 3D print some replacement parts because they are really good headphones otherwise, especially for the price I paid.

  • Trump and far right populist politicians like him are popular at the moment because they legitimise hatred. Many people around the world are angry and miserable; far right populism is like the baby dummy of political ideology and gives these people something or someone simple to hate and make themselves feel better for a few hours. Of course, none of this ever actually gets to the real reasons why they're unhappy, but they're too stupid to realise that.
