I think part of it is that he was more willing (at first) to criticise Israel, and that a large amount of New Yorkers either didn't mind or actually agreed with his comments. It's less about Zohran himself and more that the ruling class is losing its ability to influence public opinion.
The way they pretend to have learned not to oppress people after colonialism ended while still benefitting from neocolonialism will always infuriate me.
